About Al-Ameen Medical College, Bijapur
Al-Ameen Medical College, Bijapur (also known as AMC Bijapur or AMCH) is a premier private medical institution located in Vijayapur (formerly Bijapur), Karnataka. Established in September 1984 by Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, the visionary founder of the Al-Ameen Movement, the college operates under the aegis of the Al-Ameen Charitable Fund Trust, a registered trust since 1979 headquartered in Bangalore. The Trust also runs Al-Ameen Dental College, Al-Ameen Women & Children Hospital, and Fathima School of Nursing — making it one of the most comprehensive healthcare and education ecosystems in North Karnataka. The college is affiliated with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru, and has been recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC), formerly the Medical Council of India (MCI), since 1994. It is classified as a Muslim minority institution and operates under the Karnataka Religious and Linguistic Minority Professional Colleges Association (KRLMPCA). Admissions are conducted strictly through NEET UG and NEET PG scores, with seat allotment via the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) counselling process. Spreading across a magnificent 200-acre campus on the western hills of the historic city of Bijapur — a city famed for the architectural splendour of the Adil Shahi dynasty — the college offers a serene and focused academic environment. The campus is approximately 3 km from the Bijapur city centre, 8.2 km from the Bijapur Railway Station, and about 4 hours by road from Sambre Airport (Hubballi/Belgaum area). The college provides 150 MBBS seats per year along with postgraduate MD/MS programs across 13+ specializations totalling approximately 75 PG seats. The academic structure follows the phased MBBS curriculum mandated by NMC: Phase I (Pre-Clinical: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry), Phase II (Para-Clinical: Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine), Phase III Part I (Community Medicine, ENT, Ophthalmology) and Phase III Part II (Medicine, Surgery, OBG, Paediatrics). The total MBBS duration is 5.5 years including a 1-year compulsory rotating medical internship (CRRI) with 2 months in rural posting. At the heart of the campus lies the Al-Ameen Medical College Hospital (AMCH), a 700-1000-bed multi-speciality teaching hospital that serves the population of Vijayapura and surrounding districts. The hospital records over 1,300 outpatient visits daily and provides all essential OPD, IPD, ICU, NICU, Surgical Operation Theatres, Recovery Rooms, and an emergency casualty block operating 24/7 with 25 dedicated trauma beds. The hospital follows ICD-10 classification with a centralised record section. The college also maintains three Rural Health Training Centres (RHTCs) and one Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC) for community medicine postings. The academic infrastructure of AMC Bijapur is well-developed. The campus includes four air-conditioned gallery-type lecture theatres each seating 200 students, a centrally maintained library stocked with over 11,500 textbooks and 100+ national and international journals with access to digital databases, well-equipped Pre-Clinical, Para-Clinical, and Clinical departmental laboratories, modern seminar and demonstration halls, and an auditorium with multimedia projection facilities. The college maintains 21 departments in total — 3 Pre-Clinical, 4 Para-Clinical, 13 Clinical, and 1 Medical Education. The college places strong emphasis on campus life, sports, and student welfare. The extensive campus provides outdoor sporting facilities for cricket, football, volleyball, basketball, throw ball along a 200-metre athletic track, as well as an indoor sports complex with carom, chess, table tennis, and a modern gymnasium with electromagnetic treadmills. Residential facilities are offered through four separate hostels — Moulana Azad Men's Hostel (300 seats), Bibi Khatija Ladies Hostel (300 seats with attached bathrooms and solar heaters), PG Hostels for boys and ladies (300 seats combined), and an Internee's Hostel. All hostels feature 24-hour electricity, backup generators, solar water heating, own mess and kitchen, recreation halls, prayer halls, visitor rooms, and STD/ISD telephone facilities. The campus also houses a Canara Bank extension counter, cafeteria providing hygienic subsidised meals, and dedicated transport including 3 omnibuses, a dental mobile bus, and a community medicine van. Security is managed by experienced ex-servicemen round the clock. Al-Ameen Medical College has consistently ranked among the top 20 minority medical colleges in India and is a preferred destination for NEET aspirants from Karnataka and across the country. The college encourages academic research through its Scientific Research Committee and publishes the Al-Ameen Journal of Medical Sciences. MBBS interns receive monthly stipends, and PG (MD/MS) residents receive stipends ranging from INR 30,000 to 50,000 per month across years. The management and faculty are committed to shaping competent, ethically grounded medical professionals ready to serve both urban and rural communities.
