About All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Kalyani
All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Kalyani (AIIMS Kalyani) is a premier central government medical institution and an Institute of National Importance located in Saguna, Kalyani, Nadia district, West Bengal. Announced in 2014 and formally approved on October 7, 2015, under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), AIIMS Kalyani broke ground in 2016 and was officially established through a Ministry of Health and Family Welfare notification in The Gazette of India on January 24, 2018. The institute commenced operations in 2019, becoming one of six new AIIMS institutions to gain functional autonomy that year, with its inaugural batch of 50 MBBS students. By 2020, the MBBS intake was expanded to 125 seats, establishing the institute on the national medical education map. Strategically located just 50 km from Kolkata — making it far more accessible than the originally proposed Raiganj location — AIIMS Kalyani is spread across 179.82 acres in Nadia district, offering an outstanding environment for medical education, research, and patient care for Eastern India. The institute serves as a major tertiary referral centre for West Bengal and neighbouring states, with the hospital recording over 15.92 lakh OPD visits, 41,000+ IPD admissions, 10,000+ trauma and emergency cases, and 15.87 lakh+ laboratory tests since becoming operational. The institute's academic structure includes 30+ departments covering the entire spectrum of modern medicine — from General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Cardiology, and Ophthalmology to Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Community Medicine, and Psychiatry, among others. The institute follows the curriculum of AIIMS New Delhi, ensuring nationally standardized, research-integrated medical education. Faculty members are recruited from IIMs, other AIIMS, and leading national and international institutions, maintaining exceptional academic standards. The institute's infrastructure is state-of-the-art and purpose-built. The 960-bed super-specialty teaching hospital is equipped with modern Outpatient Department (OPD) blocks, Inpatient Department (IPD) wards with 360 operational beds and 18 ICU beds, modular operation theatres, advanced diagnostic laboratories, a blood bank, and a fully functional emergency and trauma centre. The Central Library, inaugurated in March 2021, is a modern learning resource centre equipped with thousands of medical books, journals, electronic resources, and a book bank facility to support students from economically weaker sections. Academically, AIIMS Kalyani has expanded significantly from its MBBS-only beginnings. The institute now offers MD and MS postgraduate programs in multiple specializations (admission via INI-CET conducted by AIIMS Delhi), MDS dental programs, B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing (60 seats, session starting annually), M.Sc. Nursing programs in Paediatric and Psychiatric Nursing (via AIIMS entrance exam), B.Sc. Paramedical courses in Medical Laboratory Technology, Operation Theatre Technology, Radiotherapy Technology, Medical Radiology & Imaging Technology (via AIIMS Paramedical Exam held annually — exam date: July 4, 2026, registration deadline: April 24, 2026), and Ph.D. programs across medical and allied disciplines. The campus is fully residential — hostel accommodation is compulsory for all MBBS students. Separate, well-maintained hostels for boys and girls feature furnished double-occupancy rooms with beds, study tables, chairs, and almirahs. The central mess provides affordable vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals, with Wi-Fi, 24×7 CCTV security, common rooms, indoor games, gymnasium, and sports grounds. The campus additionally houses a cafeteria, bank, ATM, and other essential facilities, creating a self-sufficient residential academic environment. MBBS admission at AIIMS Kalyani is exclusively through NEET UG, with seat allotment via MCC AIQ counselling. The NEET 2024 closing rank for General AI category was 2,149 (Round 1), reflecting AIIMS Kalyani's competitive standing. The first-year MBBS fee is approximately ₹1,628, and the total MBBS fee for the entire program is approximately ₹9,500 — among the most affordable medical education options in India. Interns receive a monthly stipend of ₹30,070, and compulsory residential stay ensures deep campus integration for all students. As a newer AIIMS, Kalyani is rapidly building its research and clinical reputation. The institute has been ranked 45th in the Medical category by Collegedunia in 2025 and is among the growing network of AIIMS institutions that are transforming the healthcare landscape of Eastern India. Graduates of AIIMS Kalyani benefit from the universal recognition of AIIMS degrees, strong residency opportunities, and the credibility that comes with being trained at an Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
