Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS), Bilaspur, is the oldest government medical college in Chhattisgarh, established on 10 October 2001 under Guru Ghasidas University, Bilaspur, by the Government of Chhattisgarh under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The college was inaugurated by converting the old Government District Hospital (Dharam Hospital, 350 beds) into the CIMS teaching hospital, with all hospital staff being absorbed into the new institution. MCI recognition for the MBBS degree was granted on 23 July 2007 after inspection in 2006-07. The college is now affiliated with Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay Memorial Health Sciences and Ayush University of Chhattisgarh, Raipur. CIMS offers MBBS (180 seats) and MD postgraduate programmes (27 seats across 9 disciplines). The attached Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Hospital is a 550-bed multi-specialty government teaching hospital providing tertiary care to the entire Bilaspur, Janjgir-Champa, Korba, and Bilaspur division region. The hospital was recently upgraded with a 3 Tesla MRI Scan installed with CSR funding from SECL (South Eastern Coalfields Limited), inaugurated in February 2021. Additionally, a Super Specialty Hospital for Bilaspur is under development with recruitment ongoing for super-specialty positions as of 2025. The campus is spread over 25+ acres with state-of-the-art infrastructure including 5 lecture theatres, 15+ demonstration rooms, a world-class air-conditioned auditorium with 1,500-seat capacity, fully equipped clinical and departmental laboratories, departmental museums, a central library (12,000+ books, 200 Indian and 50 foreign journals with separate reading areas for 100 students and 100 faculty), research labs, histology lab, examination hall, student lockers, and sports grounds including the CIMS International Ground.
