About Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana
Christian Medical College & Hospital (CMC), Ludhiana, is one of India's oldest and most distinguished medical institutions with a remarkable 130-year heritage. Founded in 1894 by Scottish evangelical sisters Martha Rose Greenfield and Kay Greenfield, the medical missionary work in Ludhiana began in 1881. In 1894, Dame Edith Mary Brown — a Baptist missionary and pioneering female physician — joined the effort and established the North Indian School of Medicine for Christian Women, making CMC Ludhiana the first medical school for women in Asia. The name was later changed to Women's Christian Medical College in 1913, and to Christian Medical College in 1952 to admit both men and women. The upgraded MBBS course with co-educational admission began in 1953. CMC Ludhiana is run by the Christian Medical College Ludhiana Society — an all-India educational and research institution of Christian minority character. Its primary mission is to educate and train Christian men and women as health professionals in the spirit of Jesus Christ for the healing ministry of the Church in India, while also serving the broader community through compassionate healthcare. Affiliating with Panjab University, Chandigarh from 1953 until July 1999, CMC Ludhiana then transitioned to Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), Faridkot, and has been a constituent college since. The institution is recognized by NMC, INC (Indian Nursing Council), and DCI (Dental Council of India). CMC Ludhiana's global distinction list is extraordinary: it holds the world's first WHO Collaborating Centre designation for Stroke — a status no other institution globally held before it. In 1994, the world's first total face replant surgery was performed at CMC Ludhiana by Abraham Thomas — a milestone in global surgical history. In 2019, the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR, UK) established the first surgical research hub in India at CMC Ludhiana, in partnership with the University of Birmingham and University of Edinburgh — a landmark UK-India research initiative. CMC Ludhiana was the first educational institution in India to launch telemedicine consultation with the Cleveland Clinic, USA, in 2020. FAIMER and NMC recognize it as a nodal center for faculty development — with over 1,000 faculty members from across India trained through FAIMER programs. The 44-acre campus on Brown Road, Ludhiana — adjacent to the iconic 115-year-old red sandstone Lady Willingdon Hall (named after the wife of the Viceroy of India, Marie Freeman-Thomas) — is steeped in history and modernity. Hospital buildings span 44,325 sq.mt; academic buildings cover 9,082 sq.mt; hostel and residential complex extends over 17,720 sq.mt. The library is air-conditioned, spanning 1,608 sq.mt, with 22,874 books, 66 Indian journals, and 79 foreign journals. The teaching hospital has evolved from 775 beds (reported by some sources) to 1,000+ beds (per multiple 2024-25 sources), with 7 lakh+ patients served annually. Advanced super-specialty services include Cardiology (first in Punjab to have a Cath Lab in 1984 — first coronary angiography, stenting, pacemaker, ICD, electrophysiology in Punjab), Neurology, Oncology (PET-CT), Plastic Surgery, Nephrology, Urology, Neurosurgery, and Transplant Services. A dedicated clinical biochemistry laboratory operating 24×7 with fully automated analyzers and 3-hour TAT supports diagnostic excellence. CMC Ludhiana offers 150 MBBS seats annually, 18+ PG MD/MS programs, DM and M.Ch super-specialty courses, BDS (Dental), BSc Nursing, GNM, B.Sc Allied Health Sciences (BPT, BPO, BMLT, BOTT, BASLP), MSc Nursing, and PhD programs. Total MBBS fees for the complete course are ₹33 lakhs (entire course), with a first-year fee of ₹6.60 lakhs. NEET 2025 General category cutoff score at CMC Ludhiana was 523. Hostel fees for female students: ₹24,000–₹30,000 per year. Scholarships can reduce fees by up to 75% for students with family income below ₹4 lakhs. NIRF 2025 rank: 47th in Medicine (score 51.47).
