Medical missionary work at Ludhiana began in 1881. In 1894, Dame Edith Mary Brown established the North Indian School of Medicine for Christian Women — the first medical school for women in Asia. It was renamed Women's Christian Medical College in 1913, then Christian Medical College in 1952 to admit both genders. The first co-educational MBBS batch was admitted in 1953. CMC Ludhiana has a 130-year heritage as a globally recognized medical institution.
CMC Ludhiana runs a dedicated Rural Health Outreach Programme (RHOP) providing healthcare services in rural belts around Ludhiana — including clinics at Lalton Kalan, Rauwal, Malsihan Bhaike, and Hambran. The programme is organized in conjunction with village panchayats, local trusts, and other organisations. The Department of Community Medicine pioneers community-oriented MBBS training through this programme.
CMC Ludhiana holds extraordinary global distinctions: (1) First WHO Collaborating Centre for Stroke in the world; (2) World's first total face replant surgery performed here in 1994; (3) First surgical research hub in India established in 2019 by NIHR UK in partnership with University of Birmingham and Edinburgh; (4) First Indian educational institution to launch telemedicine with Cleveland Clinic, USA (2020); (5) FAIMER/NMC nodal center for faculty development; (6) First Cath Lab in Punjab (1984).
MBBS admissions are through BFUHS (Baba Farid University of Health Sciences) Punjab counselling. Christian minority quota seats are filled through the CMC Ludhiana Society's own process; general seats through BFUHS state/management quota counselling. NRI quota is via MCC. The NEET 2025 General category closing score was 523. During NEET 2021–2024 combined, 8 candidates received AIQ allotment.
