About Dayanand Ayurvedic Medical College & Hospital, Siwan
Dayanand Ayurvedic Medical College & Hospital (DAMCH), located in Siwan, Bihar, is one of the most respected and long-standing private Ayurvedic medical institutions in the state. Established in 1972, the college has completed over five glorious decades of Ayurvedic education and healthcare service, earning a strong reputation among students and practitioners across Bihar and neighbouring states. DAMCH is permanently affiliated to Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University, Kameshwar Nagar, Darbhanga, Bihar, and is recognized by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, as well as the State Health Department, Government of Bihar. The institute operates fully in compliance with the mandates of the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), New Delhi. The college campus spreads over 5.5 acres of land in Siwan, strategically located in a region that is well connected to nearly every major part of India through extensive train and bus networks, making it highly accessible to students from across the country. The campus has been designed to provide a complete residential academic environment, with state-of-the-art infrastructure that meets the requirements of modern Ayurvedic medical education. Damch offers two programmes: the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) at the undergraduate level and the M.D. (Doctorate of Medicine in Ayurveda) at the postgraduate level. The BAMS programme is a comprehensive 5.5-year course consisting of 4.5 years of academic study followed by one year of compulsory internship. With an intake capacity of 60 students per year, the programme is structured into three semesters of 1.5 years each, and admission is based strictly on NEET UG merit. Candidates must have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, with a minimum of 50% marks for General category and 40% for reserved categories. Damch also offers postgraduate education through its M.D. (Ayurveda) programme, which has been running since the academic year 2012-13 — making it one of the few Ayurveda colleges in Bihar to offer PG courses. The PG programme spans 3 years and has a total intake of 8 seats, distributed as 4 seats in MD Kayachikitsa (Internal Medicine) and 4 seats in MD Dravyaguna Vigyana (Pharmacognosy). Admission to the MD programme is based on the All India Post Graduate Entrance Test (AIPGET). The college's academic departments comprehensively cover all major branches of Ayurvedic medicine. Fourteen fully functional departments are active: Panchakarma, Ayurveda Samhita & Siddhanta, Kriya Sharira (Physiology), Rachana Sharira (Anatomy), Dravyaguna (Pharmacognosy), Rasashastra & Bhaishajya Kalpana (Pharmaceutics), Agada Tantra Evam Vidhi Vaidyak (Toxicology & Medical Jurisprudence), Roga Nidana Evam Vikriti Vigyan (Pathology), Swasthavritta & Yoga, Kaumarabhritya (Paediatrics), Prasuti Tantra & Stri Roga (Obstetrics & Gynaecology), Kayachikitsa (General Medicine), Shalya Tantra (Surgery), and Shalakya Tantra (ENT & Ophthalmology). This full suite of departments ensures that BAMS students receive exposure across the entire curriculum. The Dayanand Ayurvedic Hospital, the teaching hospital attached to the college, is a well-known facility in and around Siwan. The hospital is situated on a separate campus in the heart of Siwan city and is equipped with 116 beds, with separate blocks for male and female patients and departments. The hospital is equipped with an operation theatre, a labour room, a dedicated Panchakarma theatre, a physiotherapy unit, an acupressure unit, a yoga hall, an emergency department, and advanced diagnostic facilities including digital X-ray, ECG, USG, and a clinical laboratory. The maternity and children's wards further extend the hospital's scope for obstetric and paediatric clinical training. DAMCH's Panchakarma unit is particularly well regarded throughout Bihar for the quality of its treatment protocols and trained therapy staff. The college campus itself is well resourced with a central library containing over 10,000 books, including classical Ayurvedic texts, modern medical references, Vedic literature, and national and international journals. The library features an internet-enabled digital section and separate reading spaces for students and faculty. In addition to the central library, departmental libraries are maintained in each academic department. The campus also features a remarkable herbal garden with over 1,000 medicinal plants from more than 250 species, complete with a greenhouse, systematic botanical labelling in Sanskrit and botanical names, and a planned irrigation system. Campus amenities include a well-maintained auditorium hall, a yoga hall, and separate hostel blocks for boys and girls with hygienic kitchen facilities and 24-hour security with CCTV surveillance. The college organises vibrant annual events including AYURFEST — a three-day sports and cultural festival — along with Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations, fresher welcome events, and regular academic programmes. Alumni of DAMCH have gone on to serve as Medical Officers in the Bihar State Health Services, testament to the quality of its training.
