About Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana
Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMCH), Ludhiana, is one of Punjab's most celebrated private medical institutions with a remarkable heritage spanning over nine decades. The institution traces its origins to 1934, when Dr. Banarsi Dass Soni — a former Captain in the Indian Military Service — conceived and started the Arya Medical School in a rented building in Civil Lines, Ludhiana. In 1936, the management was handed over to the Arya Samaj under the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha, Punjab. The school was relocated to its own building in 1937 (currently the DMCH College Campus), and in 1964, the Arya Medical School was elevated into a full-fledged MBBS college — Dayanand Medical College & Hospital — under the stewardship of the Managing Society of DMCH, with eminent industrialist Shri H.R. Dhanda as Founder President. Situated at Tagore Nagar, Civil Lines, Ludhiana — approximately 14.9–16 km from Ludhiana Airport (Sahnewal) — DMCH is centrally located and well-connected to all parts of the city and Punjab. The campus spans 34.21 acres, with academic buildings covering 27,776 sq.mt and hostels and residential complex covering 5,750 sq.mt. The campus is equipped with advanced lecture theatres, digital library, central research laboratory, state-of-the-art laboratories for all pre-clinical and para-clinical subjects, and comprehensive sports and recreational facilities. DMCH holds a record of firsts in Punjab's medical history: it was the first hospital in Punjab to set up a dialysis unit in the nephrology service in 1980 — a pioneering step that preceded most state medical institutions. Since 1 April 2001, the Hero DMC Heart Institute (HDHI) — a collaboration between Hero Group and DMCH — has been providing advanced cardiac care to patients with heart and blood vessel disease. Additionally, DMCH is the first and only institution in India to offer a unique technique of external fixators perfected by Prof. Oganesyan from Russia, giving its orthopaedic department a global distinction. The teaching hospital is a 1,326-bed (inclusive of 800 teaching beds) tertiary care facility — one of the largest in North India — with all clinical departments and diagnostic laboratories providing round-the-clock service. The hospital sees over 5 lakh outpatients and 30,000 inpatients annually. Key departments include General Medicine, Surgery, OBG, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Pulmonology, Dermatology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Radiodiagnosis, Anaesthesiology, Cardiology (Hero DMC Heart Institute), Oncology, Nephrology, and Emergency & Trauma. Academically, DMCH offers 150 MBBS seats annually (75 State Quota + 75 Management Quota including 23 NRI seats), 90 PG MD/MS seats across 19 disciplines, 19 super-specialty DM/M.Ch. seats across 9 programs, and the B.Sc. Nursing program (100 seats, via PPMET). The MBBS total academic fee for AY 2025-26 is ₹23.78 lakhs for the complete course (first-year fee: ₹4.26 lakhs). NEET 2024 AIQ General category closing rank was 36,642 (Round 1). NIRF 2025 ranked DMCH 36th (score: 55.65) — an improvement from 40th in 2024. India Today 2025 ranked it 28th; The Week 2025 ranked it 14th. Per NIRF 2024 placement data: 89 MBBS students placed with median salary ₹4.32 LPA; 54 PG students placed with median salary ₹30 LPA. DMCH College of Nursing operates on campus under INC approval. Compulsory rural service bond post-internship is mandatory.
