About Dr. Nori Rama Sastry Government Ayurvedic College, Vijayawada
Dr. Nori Rama Sastry Government Ayurvedic College (NRSGAC), Vijayawada, is one of the oldest and most distinguished government Ayurvedic institutions in India. Established in 1922, the college carries a legacy of over a century of Ayurvedic education and has produced numerous stalwarts of national repute in the field of classical Indian medicine. Located on Mahatma Gandhi Road in the heart of Vijayawada, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, the institution is managed by the Department of AYUSH under the Government of Andhra Pradesh and is affiliated with Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (also designated Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences), Vijayawada. The college was established at a time when Ayurveda was reclaiming its rightful place in the Indian healthcare landscape, and over the past century, it has consistently trained doctors who have gone on to lead government hospitals, research institutions, and private practice across India and abroad. The institution is recognised by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), formerly the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), ensuring adherence to the highest regulatory standards in Ayurvedic education. The undergraduate programme — Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) — is the flagship offering of the college. Currently, the college admits 60 students per year through NEET UG-based counselling, with an additional 15 seats reserved under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category, bringing the total intake to 75 BAMS seats. Of these, 15% are under All India Quota (AACCC-UG counselling) and 85% under State Quota (Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, AP AYUSH Counselling). The BAMS programme spans 5.5 years — 4.5 years of academic study followed by a mandatory 1-year internship — and covers all 14 departments prescribed by NCISM, from foundational sciences such as Rachana Sharir, Kriya Sharir, and Padartha Vigyan to clinical disciplines including Kayachikitsa, Shalya Tantra, Shalakya Tantra, Panchakarma, and Prasuti Tantra. The college also offers postgraduate MD (Ayurveda) programmes. The MD in Rasashastra and Bhaishajya Kalpana was the first PG programme introduced in 2003, with 5 seats per year, selected on merit through the All India AYUSH Post Graduate Entrance Test (AIAPGET). Over the years, additional PG specialisations have been added. PG admissions are conducted through AACCC-PG (15% AIQ) and Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (85% state quota). As a government institution, the fee structure at NRSGAC is among the most affordable in India. As per the AACCC counselling proforma (2023–24), the admission fee payable at the time of joining is ₹12,457 only. College fees for all three professional years are nil — making it one of the most accessible Ayurvedic medical programmes for students from economically weaker backgrounds. Hostel facilities are available at a nominal annual fee of ₹1,000. The campus is equipped with well-established laboratories, a comprehensive library, an auditorium, student hostels, a cafeteria, and an integrated teaching hospital. The attached Ayurvedic hospital serves as a practical training ground, providing students with clinical exposure in all departments. The institution remains a landmark in the Vijayawada healthcare ecosystem, offering free or subsidised Ayurvedic treatment to the local community and serving as the regional hub for government Ayurvedic services in Krishna District and the broader Andhra University local area. With over 100 years of unbroken service to Ayurvedic education and public health, Dr. Nori Rama Sastry Government Ayurvedic College stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of traditional Indian medicine in the modern healthcare system.
