ESIC Medical College and Hospital, Naroda-Bapunagar, Ahmedabad, is a newly established government medical institution under the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), a central autonomous body governed by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. The college received its Letter of Permission (LOP) from the National Medical Commission (NMC) in early 2025 for 100 MBBS seats commencing from the academic year 2025-26, making it Gujarat's 41st medical college and a significant addition to the state's medical education landscape. The Gujarat state government had previously issued an Essentiality Certificate (EC) to the 420-bed ESIC Hospital, Naroda, following which the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment, under Shri Mansukh L. Mandaviya, approved the infrastructure development and appointment of academic staff for the college. The ESIC Medical College, Ahmedabad is part of a broader national initiative announced by the Prime Minister to create 75,000 new medical seats in India over five years. As part of this initiative, ESIC had given in-principle approval for 10 new medical colleges across eight states including Maharashtra, Delhi, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand, in addition to Naroda-Bapunagar in Gujarat. This college represents the culmination of years of planning and infrastructure development at the ESIC Naroda campus. The campus of ESIC Medical College, Naroda is strategically located near the Naroda Railway Crossing on the Himmatnagar Highway, on the outskirts of Ahmedabad. The campus spans a vast 27-acre area, with approximately 4.18 acres dedicated to built infrastructure and the remaining 22.82 acres maintained as open green space — making it one of the largest ESIC healthcare campuses in Gujarat. The college is surrounded by major industrial zones, including the GIDC (Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation) estates, and is in proximity to large industries such as Reliance, Pepsi, Parle, and Ingersoll Rand, resulting in a large and diverse patient population from the industrial working class. The medical college campus features modern academic infrastructure including well-equipped lecture theatres and gallery-type classrooms, demonstration rooms, pre-clinical and para-clinical laboratories, a central library stocked with medical textbooks, reference materials, and digital resources. The campus also includes separate hostel facilities for boys and girls, with shared accommodation, dining halls, common recreation rooms, and 24x7 security. Staff residential quarters are also available on campus. The entire campus is well-connected to major areas of Ahmedabad via road and public transport. The attached ESIC General Hospital, Naroda is a 420-bed multi-specialty tertiary teaching hospital that has been serving insured workers and their families in the industrial belts of Ahmedabad for decades. This hospital provides 24x7 emergency and casualty services, full outpatient department (OPD) services across multiple specialties, and inpatient care. Major clinical departments include General Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dermatology and Venereology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, and Dental. Super specialty consultation is available in Neurology, Urology, Nephrology, Oncology, and Endocrinology. The hospital also houses an AYUSH department, a physiotherapy and occupational therapy unit, a blood bank, and a pharmacy. The hospital serves over 75,000 insured persons in the Naroda-Bapunagar industrial region and also receives referrals from across North Gujarat. Admission to ESIC Medical College, Ahmedabad is strictly through NEET-UG. There is no management quota and no NRI quota at any ESIC medical college in India. The 100 MBBS seats are divided into three categories: 15 seats under the All India Quota (AIQ), administered by MCC; 50 seats under the Gujarat State Quota, administered by ACPUGMEC; and 35 seats under the ESIC IP (Insured Persons) Quota, reserved exclusively for wards of ESIC-insured employees. The IP Quota carries the most heavily subsidized fee structure, with a tuition fee of just ₹24,000 per year compared to ₹1,00,000 per year for general category students, making ESIC one of the most affordable MBBS destinations in India. All admitted students are required to execute a bond of ₹5,00,000 to serve in any ESIC or ESI scheme institution for one year after completing the MBBS internship. This bond ensures that ESIC-trained doctors contribute back to the public healthcare system. If the bond is breached, a penalty of ₹5,00,000 along with 12% annual interest is levied. Being a newly established college (AY 2025-26 first batch), postgraduate MD/MS courses are not yet available at ESIC Medical College, Naroda-Bapunagar. However, based on the precedent set by other ESIC medical colleges like Chennai (KK Nagar) and Hyderabad, PG programs are expected to be introduced in future years as the institution matures, faculty strength increases, and infrastructure expands further. Although newly established, ESIC Medical College, Ahmedabad benefits from its institutional heritage — being part of the ESIC network which has been providing healthcare to Indian workers for decades. The college's association with an established functioning hospital, the support of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, and its location in India's fastest-growing industrial city position it as a strong and reliable government medical institution for the future.
