About GMERS Medical College and Hospital, Gandhinagar
GMERS Medical College and Hospital, Gandhinagar is a premier government-society medical institution established in 2012, situated in the heart of Gandhinagar, the capital city of Gujarat, India. It operates under the Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS), which was formed by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Gujarat, with the mission of expanding quality medical education across the state. The college is affiliated with Gujarat University, Ahmedabad — the largest and most prestigious university in Gujarat — and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India. It is counted among the fastest-growing and most respected medical colleges in Gujarat. The foundation stone of the college was laid in 2010, and the institution formally commenced academic operations in August 2012 with an initial batch of 150 MBBS students. Since 2019, the annual MBBS intake has been expanded to 200 seats, reflecting the institution's growing recognition and infrastructure. The college is affiliated with the renowned Civil Hospital, Gandhinagar, which serves as the primary teaching hospital and is one of the largest hospitals in the Gandhinagar district. Over the years, GMERS Gandhinagar has distinguished itself through its commitment to quality undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, robust clinical training, and research-oriented culture. The campus spans a lush and expansive 42-acre area, strategically located just 2 km from Gandhinagar Railway Station, approximately 14 km from Ahmedabad Railway Station (around 16 minutes of travel), and 18–20 km from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad — making it easily accessible from across India. The campus is thoughtfully designed to accommodate all essential academic and residential requirements under one roof. Infrastructure on campus includes a modern G+5 storey college building, the large teaching hospital, an auditorium with a capacity of 1,000 persons, spacious gallery-type lecture halls, doctors' staff quarters, nursing staff quarters, resident doctors' hostel, a boys' hostel, a girls' hostel, a playground, and a range of other student support facilities. The Central Library, located on the first floor of the new college building, covers an area of approximately 2,400 square metres and houses over 2,837 books along with access to a wide range of national and international medical journals. Students also benefit from the Gujarat Government's 'Virtual Library' program, which provides digital access to e-books, online databases, and other scholarly resources. With two seminar/lecture halls — one external and one internal — each with a capacity of 150 students, the library caters well to the academic needs of the student community. Academic excellence is a cornerstone at GMERS Gandhinagar. The MBBS program spans 5.5 years, inclusive of a one-year compulsory internship, and is structured across four phases: Pre-clinical, Para-clinical, Clinical, and Post-examination. The institute offers 17 postgraduate seats across 5 MD/MS disciplines, including MD in Anaesthesiology (6 seats), MD in Emergency Medicine, MD in Microbiology, and other specialties. The faculty comprises experienced professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and tutors across all pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical departments. The institute maintains a good teacher-to-student ratio and is committed to holistic academic growth. The Civil Hospital, Gandhinagar — the attached teaching hospital — originally commissioned in 1969 and now expanded to over 790 beds, provides students with extensive and diverse clinical exposure. The hospital offers 24×7 emergency and trauma care, critical care services, eye bank, blood bank, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and burn treatment facilities. The departments span a full range of specialties including General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiodiagnosis, ENT, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Forensic Medicine — providing students with comprehensive training across all medical fields.
