About GMERS Medical College and Hospital, Gotri, Vadodara
GMERS Medical College and Hospital, Gotri, Vadodara is a prestigious government-society medical institution established in June 2011, situated in the historic city of Vadodara (Baroda), Gujarat, India. It operates under the Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS), which was formed by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Gujarat, with the mission of bridging the critical shortage of medical facilities and trained healthcare professionals across the state. The college is affiliated with the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (MS University) — one of the most distinguished universities in India — and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India. It is widely regarded as one of the fastest-growing and most respected GMERS institutions in Gujarat. The college received its first Letter of Permission for the MBBS program from the Medical Council of India (now NMC) on 29th June 2011. It initially admitted 150 MBBS students per year, and since 2019, this intake has been increased to 200 students annually, reflecting the institution's expanding infrastructure and academic capacity. GMERS Gotri has distinguished itself through its adherence to the NMC-mandated Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum, which aims to produce graduates who are not only clinically competent but also effective communicators, leaders, critical thinkers, lifelong learners, and ethical professionals. The campus is situated on the premises of the Old TB Hospital Campus, Gotri Road, Vadodara — a strategically accessible location within the city. The sprawling 27-acre green campus integrates a modern multi-storeyed college building (G+7 floors), a large teaching hospital, doctors' staff quarters, a resident doctors' hostel, boys' and girls' hostels, playgrounds, indoor gymnasium, and a wide range of student support facilities. The campus is located approximately 1.2 km from Gotri Bus Stand, making it easily reachable by public transport. Vadodara Airport is also in close proximity, facilitating access for outstation and international students. The college building itself is a seven-storeyed structure housing all pre-clinical and para-clinical departments across dedicated floors. The ground floor accommodates the Dean's office, college administrative sections, and the Anatomy department. Subsequent floors house the departments of Community Medicine, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Pathology, and Forensic Medicine, along with lecture theatres, examination halls, a Medical Education Unit (MEU), central research laboratory, and the MYSY/CMSS help centre. The academic infrastructure is outstanding. The college features five air-conditioned lecture theatres — four with a seating capacity of 200 each (LT 1–4) and one large auditorium-style hall with a capacity of 500 (LT-5). All lecture theatres are equipped with e-podiums and audio-visual aids. Each department has two demonstration rooms and practical laboratories for small-group learning, as well as departmental research laboratories and departmental libraries. Four major museums are housed in the college building — covering Anatomy (with 200+ wet and dry specimens and 50 embryology models), Microbiology, Pathology (with 200+ specimens), and Forensic Medicine and Toxicology — providing unique hands-on learning experiences for students. The Central Library, housed in a dedicated ground-plus-one storeyed building next to the Girls' Hostel, contains over 12,000 national and international books and 150 journals covering all medical specialties. The library is equipped with computers and tablets and has a 24×7 air-conditioned reading room accessible to all students. A Virtual Library facility is also available through the Gujarat Government's digital portal. The teaching hospital — Gotri General Hospital — is one of the largest multi-specialty hospitals in Vadodara with a current operational bed strength of approximately 530 beds and a sanctioned capacity of 750 beds. The hospital provides 24×7 emergency and trauma care, eye bank, blood bank, critical care, burn treatment, pharmacy, and physiotherapy services. Students receive comprehensive clinical exposure across all major specialties including General Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiodiagnosis, ENT, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Forensic Medicine, Emergency Medicine, TB and Respiratory Medicine, Community Medicine, Pharmacology, and Dentistry. For postgraduate education, the college offers a remarkable 106 MD/MS seats across multiple broad specialties and 4 DNB seats, making it one of the most significant PG training centres among GMERS colleges. The PG program follows a competency-based training framework focusing on professional competence, ethics, communication, leadership, teamwork, empathy, and compassion. Hostel facilities are available for boys, girls, interns, and postgraduate students, all equipped with furnished rooms (tables, chairs, cupboards, cots), mess services providing hygienic food, water purifiers, water coolers, and 24-hour water supply. The campus offers an indoor gymnasium on the first floor of the Interns' Hostel, an outdoor gymnasium between the Interns' and Residents' Hostel, volleyball courts, and indoor recreational facilities including table tennis, pool table, and carrom. Yoga classes are regularly conducted in the college porch, and a range of hobby clubs — sports, music, drama, dance, arts and crafts, and photography — are available for students. GMERS Gotri maintains a strictly ragging-free campus, adhering to all Central and State Government anti-ragging regulations, with the Anti-Ragging toll-free helpline (1800-180-5522) active and accessible year-round. After completing MBBS and internship, graduates are required to serve a bond period in government/rural health services as per Gujarat state policy.
