Government Erode Medical College and Hospital (GEMC), Perundurai — formerly IRT Perundurai Medical College — is a unique government medical institution with a rich history dating back to 1936. Originally the Ramalingam Tuberculosis Sanatorium (founded 1936, inaugurated 1939 by C. Rajagopalachari), it evolved into a medical college under the Institute of Road Transport (IRT) in 1986, commencing MBBS in 1992. The Tamil Nadu Government took over in 2019, renaming it Government IRT Perundurai Medical College, and it served as a designated COVID-19 centre in 2020. Located off Salem-Kochi National Highway 544 near Perundurai in Erode district, the campus spans 308.5 acres (208 acres transferred to Health & Family Welfare Dept). The G+3 academic block opened in 1993 houses spacious classrooms, lecture halls, demonstration rooms, clinical laboratories, museum, and auditorium. The GEMC Main Hospital (GEMCH), opened in 1994, started as a 550-bed facility and now functions with over 1,200 beds including the Rotary Special Block (400 oxygen-supported beds sponsored by Rotary chapters) and a large cryogenic oxygen tank.
