Government Erode Medical College and Hospital (GEMC), Perundurai โ formerly IRT Perundurai Medical College โ is a unique government medical institution with a rich history dating back to 1936. Originally the Ramalingam Tuberculosis Sanatorium (founded 1936, inaugurated 1939 by C. Rajagopalachari), it evolved into a medical college under the Institute of Road Transport (IRT) in 1986, commencing MBBS in 1992. The Tamil Nadu Government took over in 2019, renaming it Government IRT Perundurai Medical College, and it served as a designated COVID-19 centre in 2020. Located off Salem-Kochi National Highway 544 near Perundurai in Erode district, the campus spans 308.5 acres (208 acres transferred to Health & Family Welfare Dept). The G+3 academic block opened in 1993 houses spacious classrooms, lecture halls, demonstration rooms, clinical laboratories, museum, and auditorium. The GEMC Main Hospital (GEMCH), opened in 1994, started as a 550-bed facility and now functions with over 1,200 beds including the Rotary Special Block (400 oxygen-supported beds sponsored by Rotary chapters) and a large cryogenic oxygen tank. With 100 MBBS seats and 9 PG seats across multiple specializations, GEMC is ranked 18th among Tamil Nadu state medical colleges.

GEMC traces its origins to the Ramalingam Tuberculosis Sanatorium (1936/1939). A medical college was added in 1986 under the Institute of Road Transport (IRT), commencing MBBS in 1992. The Tamil Nadu Government took over in 2019 (renamed GIRTPMC), and it served as a COVID-19 centre in 2020 (renamed GEMC).
GEMC has 100 NMC-approved MBBS seats: 85 through Tamil Nadu State Quota (including IRT employee children) and 15 through MCC AIQ. Originally 60 seats, increased to 100 from 2020-21.
Annual government tuition fee is approximately Rs. 24,222 with total MBBS tuition around Rs. 109000 over 4.5 years.
GEMCH (Government Erode Medical College Hospital) started with 550 beds in 1994 and now functions with 1,200+ beds. The Rotary Special Block with 400 oxygen-supported beds was sponsored by Rotary chapters. A large cryogenic oxygen tank supports critical care. The campus spans 308.5 acres.
