About Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh
Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Chandigarh, is one of India's premier government medical institutions, established in 1991 under the Chandigarh Administration. The foundation stone was laid by the then Prime Minister of India, Shri Chandra Shekhar, on 20 January 1991, on 36.09 acres of land allotted by the Chandigarh Administration in Sector 32. The college was started to address the acute absence of an undergraduate medical institution in Chandigarh — a city already home to the prestigious Panjab University and PGIMER. GMCH initially operated from the Prayaas building, Sector 38, with General Hospital Sector 16 as the attached teaching hospital, before shifting to its permanent campus at Sector 32. The first batch of 50 students was admitted in August 1991; the first batch passed their Final MBBS in January 1996. Intake was progressively raised — from 50 to 100 (AY 2013-14), and from 100 to 150 (AY 2019-20). The college is affiliated with Panjab University, Chandigarh, and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the Indian Nursing Council (INC), and the UGC. GMCH offers a comprehensive academic portfolio: MBBS (150 seats), MD/MS postgraduate degree programmes (132 seats across 21 departments), DM/MCh super-specialty programmes, MPhil in Clinical Psychology and Psychiatric Social Work, MSc in Mental Health (Psychiatric Nursing), BSc programmes in Nursing, Medical Lab Technology, X-Ray Technology, Optometry, and Medical Technology (Anaesthesia & OT Techniques), and the GCET-based allied health paramedical courses. Faculty is selected through UPSC, ensuring the highest academic quality. The attached teaching hospital is a 1,000+ bed tertiary care referral centre serving not just Chandigarh but also parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, providing students with an unparalleled diversity and volume of clinical cases. The 36.09-acre campus (Blocks A to J) features spacious lecture theatres, modern seminar rooms, a large AC auditorium, a well-stocked library, skill labs, an embalming room, Histology labs, well-equipped museums, and extensive hostel facilities for UG, PG, and Nursing students. GMCH is ranked 34th in the NIRF 2025 Medical Category, consistently placing among India's top 35 medical colleges. It is known for its 'Euphoria' cultural festival, safe Chandigarh environment, and strong NEET PG outcomes — MBBS graduates gain institutional preference for MD/MS seats within GMCH. NIRF 2022 data confirmed 69% PG placement rate with a median package of INR 10.8 LPA.
