About Government Medical College, Jammu
Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu is one of the oldest, most prestigious, and largest government medical colleges in the Jammu & Kashmir UT. Established in 1973 (some sources: 1972) in Bakshi Nagar, Jammu – the 'Temple City' – it is affiliated with the University of Jammu and recognised by NMC. The 15-acre campus houses the main college building, administrative offices, hostel facilities, and multiple associated hospitals with a combined bed strength of 2,025 beds (5 associated hospitals). GMC Jammu offers: 180 MBBS seats (153 J&K UT Quota + 27 AIQ), 214 PG seats (MD/MS across multiple disciplines), PG Diploma (33 seats), GNM (160 seats – females only), B.Sc Paramedical (110 seats), and newly approved Super-Specialty DM Cardiology (4 seats) + MCh Urology (4 seats) from 2025-26. The college has ~350 faculty and 1,000 supporting staff. Auditorium capacity: 830 seats. Central library: 180-seat capacity with internet facility. Yes – from 2025-26, NMC approved 4 DM Cardiology seats and 4 MCh Urology seats (approved February 20, 2026). This is the first time GMC Jammu has super-specialty courses. Via MCC SS counselling.
GMC Jammu was established in 1973 (some sources cite 1972). It started with 50 MBBS students, grew to 100, then 150, and now 180 seats. By 1974, it had added Chest Hospital and Psychiatric Hospital associations. Now has 5 associated hospitals with 2,025 combined beds.
Year-wise tuition: 1st year ₹26,250 | 2nd year ₹9,375 | 3rd & 4th year ₹6,250 each | Internship year: nil tuition. Total tuition: ₹48,125. Plus: hostel ₹1,500/year + electricity ₹2,000/year (non-AC) + college subscriptions ₹1,200/year (games, library, identity card, annual day, magazine, terminal exam, lab fee). Total all charges (5.5 years): ~₹70,425–₹1,31,000 (Collegedunia ₹1.31L includes all one-time charges). No management or NRI quota.
180 MBBS seats: 27 AIQ (MCC) + 153 J&K UT Quota (JKBOPEE). No management or NRI quota. Largest MBBS intake in J&K UT (equal to GMC Srinagar at 153 JKBOPEE seats + 27 AIQ = 180 total).
