About Government Medical College, Kottayam
Government Medical College, Kottayam, the third government medical college in Kerala, was formally inaugurated on December 3, 1962, by Chief Minister R. Sankar. Initially operating from the District Hospital, it shifted to its present sprawling 265-acre Gandhinagar campus in April 1970. Affiliated with Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) and recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the college holds an A++ NAAC grade and is designated a Regional Medical Education Center by NMC. With an annual intake of 175 MBBS students, 146 PG students (MD/MS/DM/MCh), and 196 pharmacy and paramedical students, the institution is served by 327 regular teaching faculty and over 1,550 support staff. The attached 2094-bedded tertiary care hospital handles over 3,000 outpatients and 500 emergency cases daily, functioning as the referral center for five districts. GMC Kottayam has achieved several medical firsts, including India's first government-sector heart transplant, Kerala's first test tube baby, the first government liver transplant (2022), and India's first government multidisciplinary transgender clinic.
