About Government Medical College, Srinagar
Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar is the oldest and most prestigious medical college in Jammu & Kashmir, established in 1959. Located at Karan Nagar, ~1.5 km from Lal Chowk in the heart of Srinagar – the summer capital – the campus spans ~47–100 acres. GMC Srinagar is affiliated with the University of Kashmir and recognised by NMC. The college started PG courses in pre-clinical subjects in 1966. It is the number one medical educator in J&K UT and one of the largest in North India, offering MBBS, MD/MS (277 seats in 18 disciplines from 2025-26), DNB, DM/MCh (14 SS seats across 7 disciplines), DrNB Thoracic Surgery, FNB Paediatric Nephrology, and ~1,000 nursing/allied health students per year. From 2025-26, MBBS seats increased to 200 (from 180) and PG MD/MS seats to 277 (from 259). Eight associated hospitals (SMHS, Lal Ded, Bone & Joint, IMHANS, Super Speciality Hospital, Chest Diseases Hospital, Children's Hospital, Kashmir Nursing Home) with combined 3,200+ beds serve 2.75 million+ patients annually with 2.57 lakh+ admissions.
