About Government Medical College, Surat

Official website

Government Medical College, Surat (GMC Surat) is one of the most prestigious and well-established government medical institutions in South Gujarat and among the top three government medical colleges in the state. Established in 1964 under the Government of Gujarat, the college was founded with the primary objective of imparting quality medical education and extending tertiary-level healthcare to the patients of South Gujarat and surrounding regions. It is affiliated with Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU), Surat, and is fully recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The college carries the college code 'SMED' in the MCC and ACPUGMEC counselling systems. The campus of Government Medical College, Surat is spread over a sprawling 130-acre area in the heart of Surat city, near Majura Gate. This vast campus houses the main Medical College building (26,310 sq.m.), the New Civil Hospital with its OPD complex (49,293 sq.m.), the Hostel and Residential Complex (74,160 sq.m.), Library (4,050 sq.m.), Government Physiotherapy College, Government Nursing College, residential quarters for teaching, non-teaching, and nursing staff, and extensive green open spaces. The prime location of the campus in Surat city — just 5 km from the GSRTC Bus Terminal and Surat Railway Station, and 12.6 km from Surat International Airport — ensures excellent connectivity for students from across Gujarat and India. Government Medical College, Surat was established simultaneously with the New Civil Hospital (NCH), Surat in 1964, beginning with an initial MBBS intake of 100 students and a hospital capacity of 300 beds. Over the following six decades, both the college and the hospital have grown significantly. The MBBS intake was progressively increased from 100 to 150 and then to 250 students, with each increase formally permitted by the MCI/NMC through official LOPs, copies of which are publicly available on the college website. At present, the college annually admits 250 students for the MBBS degree course, making it one of the largest government medical colleges in Gujarat. The academic infrastructure of GMC Surat is exemplary. The college has 23 departments across pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical disciplines, with over 250 dedicated faculty members including professors, associate professors, and assistant professors, all MD/MS qualified in their respective specialties. The college boasts spacious classrooms, large lecture halls, examination halls, and well-equipped demonstration rooms. The Medical Education Unit (MEU) at GMC Surat actively oversees curriculum implementation, faculty development, and adherence to the NMC Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) framework. The college also has an active Institutional Review Board (IRB) with a Scientific Review Committee and Ethics Committee to support high-quality medical research. The Library and Information Centre is a major academic asset of GMC Surat. Located in a three-storied building spanning 2,400 square metres with a total floor area of 4,050 sq.m., it houses 20,200 books, 10,090 magazines with back volumes, 805 dissertations, 58 Indian journals, and 54 foreign journals. The reading room has separate halls for undergraduate students (capacity 750), postgraduate students (capacity 200), and staff (capacity 50). A digital library with internet access is also available, making GMC Surat one of the best-resourced government medical college libraries in Gujarat. The attached teaching hospital — New Civil Hospital (NCH), Surat — is the backbone of clinical training at GMC Surat. The New Civil Hospital began with 300 beds in 1964 and has grown to a current teaching-bed capacity of 1,150 beds, supplemented by 110 specialized beds for ICUs and special rooms, making it one of the largest public hospitals in South Gujarat. The hospital serves approximately 4,000 outdoor patients daily and admits 150 to 200 inpatients every day, providing students with extensive and diverse clinical exposure from the very beginning of their MBBS course. The hospital is equipped with 24 operation theatres, nine of which are state-of-the-art modular OTs. Its facilities include NABL-accredited laboratories for Pathology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology, a NABH-accredited Blood Bank (Immuno-Histology and Blood Transfusion), round-the-clock ambulance services including an 'ICU on Wheels', computerized OPD registration with token system, and dedicated services for senior citizens and differently-abled patients. Specialized services at New Civil Hospital include a NICU, PICU, Milk Bank, Hemophilia Centre, DOST Centre, De-addiction Centre, District Early Intervention Centre, ART Centre (awarded the Best ART Centre in Gujarat for serving the maximum number of patients), DOTS Centre for tuberculosis, and an STI Clinic. The hospital also houses a Government Physiotherapy College and a Government Nursing College within its campus. The Primary Health Centre and Rural/Urban Health Training Centres include RHTC-Sachin (22 km from the college), which provides students community medicine fieldwork exposure. In terms of postgraduate medical education, GMC Surat offers 177 postgraduate degree and diploma seats across 22 disciplines. PG degree programmes include MD and MS across all major clinical and para-clinical specialties, while PG diploma courses are offered in select specialties. Additionally, 1 super-specialization (M.Ch.) seat is available in 1 discipline. Admission to PG and Super-Specialty courses is through NEET-PG scores via MCC (50% AIQ) and Gujarat ACPPGMEC (50% State Quota) counselling. The college further offers a Diploma in Nursing (GNM) through the Government Nursing College attached to New Civil Hospital. The hostel facility at GMC Surat is well-established. Separate hostels for boys and girls are available within the 130-acre campus. The hostel complex spans 74,160 sq.m. and includes comfortable living spaces, dining halls/mess, gymnasiums (physical instructors assigned by the college), indoor and outdoor game facilities, recreation rooms, and 24x7 security. The residential quarters for staff are also on campus, creating a self-contained academic township. GMC Surat has a distinguished track record in NEET counselling, with consistently competitive cutoffs — reflecting the college's strong reputation and demand among NEET aspirants. For 2024 (AIQ General category), the MBBS closing rank was 9,920, while the 2025 Round 3 AIQ General category closing rank was 5,503. The college is ranked among the top government medical colleges in Gujarat and is considered among the top 3 by preference in state quota counselling. The institution's mission, as articulated by Dean Dr. Jayesh M. Brahmbhatt, is to nurture healthcare providers by cultivating Clinical Competence, Compassionate Care, Educational Excellence, Innovative Research, Ethical Professionalism, and Lifelong Learning. GMC Surat stands as a testament to six decades of commitment to medical education, research, and public healthcare in South Gujarat.
