CAT Cutoffs for MBA at Indian Institute of Management Calcutta
| Category | VARC | DILR | QA | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OPEN | 80 | 80 | 75 | 85 |
| EWS | 70 | 65 | 65 | 75 |
| NC-OBC | 70 | 65 | 65 | 75 |
| SC | 65 | 60 | 60 | 70 |
| ST | 55 | 55 | 55 | 65 |
| PwD | 45 | 45 | 45 | 55 |
ST candidates need 55 in each section and 65 overall, while candidates with benchmark disabilities need 45 in each section and 55 overall. The Institute states plainly that the actual cut-offs may be much higher than these minimums because they depend on the number of candidates to be called for the interview in each category. In practice, therefore, these are entry thresholds and not guarantees of a call. After Stage I, candidates are ranked on a composite score of 85 points made up of 56 points for the CAT score, 10 points for Class 10 marks, 15 points for Class 12 marks and 4 points for gender diversity, and category-wise composite cut-offs decide who is called for the Personal Interview and Writing Ability Test.
Class 10 and Class 12 marks are scored in bands. A candidate with 80 percent or more in Class 10 earns 10 points, with 75 to 80 percent earns 8 points, 70 to 75 earns 6 points, 65 to 70 earns 4 points, and 60 to 65 earns 2 points, while Class 12 marks earn 15, 12, 9, 6 and 3 points in the same bands. For the final selection, the CAT score carries 30 points, the Personal Interview 48 points, the Writing Ability Test 8 points, academic diversity up to 6 points and work experience up to 8 points. This means that the interview is the single most important part of the final composite, which is why strong preparation for the interview matters even for candidates with high CAT scores.
The number of candidates called for the interview and writing test in each category depends on the size of the incoming batch and is at the sole discretion of the Institute. IIM Calcutta reserves the right to verify eligibility at any stage and to amend its policy, and offered candidates cannot defer admission to a later year. The MBAEx does not use CAT; it needs a GMAT score at or above the 50th percentile equivalent, although the batch enrolled in 2026-27 averaged above the 85th percentile, and the PGDBA uses its own admission test.
