IIT Bhilai has one of the most progressive curricula among newer IITs. It uniquely incorporates liberal arts and creative arts electives (Music, Movie-making, Fine Arts, Photojournalism, Performing Arts), B.Tech Honours options, and project-based pedagogy. The institute has MoUs with Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) for joint research and internships — a rare advantage for MSME students. It also has collaborative ties with CDAC Pune and the Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority.

IIT Bhilai is ranked 72nd in Engineering by NIRF 2025, improving from 73rd in 2024 and 81st in 2023. It is ranked 54th by IIRF 2025 and 38th by Collegedunia 2025. Notably, it won 1st place in the Inter-IIT SciTech Meet in the Data Analysis event in 2024 — the first time a third-generation IIT topped that competition.

The B.Tech tuition fee is INR 2,00,000/year (INR 8 Lakhs total for 4 years). The total all-inclusive 4-year cost including one-time fees, hostel, and charges is approximately INR 9.02 Lakhs for General/OBC students with family income above INR 5 LPA. SC/ST/PwD students receive a 100% tuition waiver. Students with family income below INR 1 LPA get full remission; those with INR 1–5 LPA income get 2/3rd remission (effective annual tuition ~INR 66,666).
