About Indian Institute of Technology Mandi
Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi / IITM) is one of the eight second-generation IITs established by the Government of India in 2009, and holds the rare distinction of being the only IIT located in the Western Himalayas. Nestled in the breathtaking Kamand Valley in Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh, on the banks of the Uhl River at an altitude of approximately 800 metres, IIT Mandi is one of the most scenic and ecologically distinctive engineering campuses in the world. The institute was the first among all new-generation IITs to fully relocate B.Tech students to the permanent campus (April 2015). The 538-acre campus is divided into North and South campuses connected by intra-campus buses running 6 AM–midnight. It is structured around nine schools: Computing and Electrical Engineering, Engineering, Basic Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management, Biosciences and Bioengineering, Chemical Sciences, Mathematics, and Design — enabling truly interdisciplinary education. Academically, IIT Mandi is celebrated for being the first IIT in India to introduce a B.Tech in Data Science and Engineering. It offers B.Tech in 9 specializations (including unique programs like Microelectronics and VLSI Design, Engineering Physics, and Biosciences and Bioengineering), a B.Tech + M.Tech Dual Degree, M.Tech in 5 confirmed specializations, M.Sc in 4 science disciplines, M.A. in Development Studies, an MBA in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, and Ph.D. / Integrated Ph.D. programs across all schools. Research at IIT Mandi is deeply tied to its Himalayan location — pioneering work in disaster-resilient infrastructure, Himalayan ecology, glaciology, clean water, sustainable energy, and mountain engineering. International collaborations include the Technical University of Munich (Germany), Blekinge Institute of Technology (Sweden), and Kyushu University (Japan). National collaborations include IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, DRDO, ISRO, and CSIR. In NIRF 2025, IIT Mandi ranks 26th in Engineering. It was ranked 8th in NIRF Innovation 2024 and 14th by India Today Engineering 2025. In QS Asian University Rankings 2025, it is placed at 491–500. In 2024-25, 93.4% of registered UG students were placed, with an average package of INR 27 LPA and highest of INR 52 LPA. The annual techno-cultural fest Exodia, Rann-Neeti sports fest, the AstraX astronomy meet organised by STAC, and the mandatory Hiking and Trekking Club for first-year students make campus life uniquely enriching.
