IIT Roorkee hosts several major annual events: Thomso (cultural festival, one of the oldest in IITs — started 1982), Cognizance (annual technical festival), and Kshitij (inter-branch sports competition). The institute also organises an annual Entrepreneurship Summit and Research Conclave. Students participate in the Inter-IIT Sports Meet and Cultural Meet. Campus life is supported by the UG Club, PG Club, Alaknanda Club, and Jawahar Club.

The Golden Girl Scheme is IIT Roorkee's special initiative to promote female participation in postgraduate technical education. Under this scheme, a female student who holds a Gold Medal (first rank) from any IIT or recognised university is directly eligible for admission to M.Tech, M.Arch, MURP, or M.Des programmes without needing a GATE score. This makes IIT Roorkee one of the most proactive IITs in supporting women in STEM at the PG level.
