About Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla

Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla is the oldest and most prestigious government medical college in Himachal Pradesh. Originally known as Himachal Pradesh Medical College (HPMC) when it was established in 1966, it was renamed Indira Gandhi Medical College in 1984. Located in the heart of Shimla city on Ridge Sanjauli Road, Lakkar Bazar, within a breathtaking hill station environment, the college is spread over 19.2 acres. IGMC is affiliated with Himachal Pradesh University and recognised by NMC and INC. It admits 120 MBBS students annually, offers 138 PG (MD/MS) seats across 26 disciplines – the largest PG programme among HP government colleges – and super-specialty DM/MCh in 4 disciplines (7 seats). The attached Kamla Nehru State Hospital (KNSH) is a 900+ bed tertiary care teaching hospital providing comprehensive healthcare to the people of Shimla and the wider HP region. IGMC is ranked 22nd by NIRF 2023 and 10th by Outlook India and The Week magazine. MBBS fee is ~₹50,000/year (highly subsidised).
