The Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (IMS BHU), Varanasi, is one of India's oldest and most prestigious medical institutions, established in 1960 as part of the historic Banaras Hindu University (BHU, founded 1916). Comprising three faculties — Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dental Sciences, and Faculty of Ayurveda — IMS BHU is a constituent of BHU, a Central University designated as an Institute of Eminence (IoE) by the Government of India. NIRF Medical Rank 7 (2024); listed in QS Top 100 global medical colleges (2021). The attached 1,600-bed Sir Sunderlal Hospital (SSH) and 250-bed Super-Specialty Block are the only tertiary care facilities serving approximately 20 crore people across eastern UP, western Bihar, MP, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and neighbouring Nepal and Bhutan — earning it the title 'AIIMS of Eastern UP.' The hospital features 80+ OPD clinics, 45+ modular OTs, 150 ICU beds, Level-1 trauma care, PET-CT, 3T MRI, Da Vinci robotic surgery, hybrid cath-lab, and bone-marrow transplant unit.
