About Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, Puducherry
Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, is one of India's most prestigious and historic medical institutions — an Institution of National Importance ranked 4th in the Medical category by NIRF 2025, with a 200-year history rooted in French colonial tropical medicine. It was originally established in 1823 as the École de Médecine de Pondichéry by French India — one of the earliest tropical medicine institutions in the world. After the de jure transfer of Puducherry to India in 1956, the Government of India took over the college and renamed it Medical College, Pondicherry (also briefly Dhanvantri Medical College). The foundation stone for a new campus at Gorimedu was laid in 1959, and in 1964, the institution was renamed in honour of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, as Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER). In 2008, JIPMER was declared an Institution of National Importance by the Parliament of India. Academics & Scale: JIPMER admits approximately 249 MBBS students annually — 187 at the Puducherry main campus and 62 at its Karaikal Branch Campus (established 2016). The institution offers 100+ programmes across UG, PG, super-specialty, and doctoral levels, including MBBS, B.Sc Nursing, B.Sc Allied Health Sciences, MD/MS (~200 PG seats), DM/MCh (super-specialty), M.Sc, MPH, PhD, and Fellowship programmes. PG admission is via INI-CET (for MD/MS/super-specialty) — not through NEET PG, a key distinction from other institutions. MBBS admission is via NEET UG with 100% centralised MCC counselling (no state quota in the traditional sense). Teaching Hospital: The JIPMER hospital complex is one of the largest and most advanced government medical complexes in South India. A second super-specialty block (SSB-II) and the JIPMER International School of Public Health are under development. The Department of Radiotherapy has been a Regional Cancer Centre since 2002 with dedicated Medical Oncology and Radiotherapy departments. JIPMER has partnerships with Harvard School of Public Health (under an MoU between the American Medical School and India's Ministry of Health) and the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH), South Korea, for telemedicine and research collaboration. Campus & Research: The 195-acre campus at Gorimedu, Puducherry, houses the medical college, old and new hospital blocks, student and resident hostels, staff quarters, a Kendriya Vidyalaya, nationalised bank branches, ATMs, a post office, a temple, the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam JIPMER Auditorium, playgrounds, and sports fields. JIPMER has over 300 active faculty members and publishes 500+ research papers annually in reputed journals. It maintains a faculty-to-student ratio of 1:7. Fees: JIPMER has among the lowest tuition fees in India — total MBBS tuition for the entire course is ₹14,920–₹35,620 (under ₹7,000/year). MD/MS annual fees: ₹20,960–₹30,279/year. Hostel: ₹12,000–₹24,000/year. Alumni: JIPMER has a strong global alumni network including JAANA (North America) and JAAUK (United Kingdom) chapters. The largest alumni community is 'Jipmernet'. Notable alumni include Dr. K.R. Balakrishnan, who performed India's first permanent artificial heart transplant using HeartMate II LVAD. The Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences at AIIMS-like stature was conceptualised with JIPMER input. Karaikal Campus: The JIPMER Karaikal branch (62 MBBS seats) operates from a 41-acre campus at Kovilpattu with its own hospital, hostels (204 rooms in 8 blocks), and the same central library digital content as the main campus. The Karaikal hospital is expanding. In summary, JIPMER is India's 4th-ranked medical institution (NIRF 2025), with a 200-year history, 249 MBBS seats, 200+ PG/SS seats, Harvard and Seoul NUB partnerships, NIRF top-4 ranking, and the most affordable tuition fees in the country — making it the pinnacle of medical education in South India.

Frequently Asked Questions
NEET 2024 General category closing rank: approximately 11,260 for Puducherry main campus. In earlier years (2022–2023), General category closing ranks hovered around 300–400 NEET score-range. JIPMER is extremely competitive with only 249 total seats nationally.
