About Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Porompat, Imphal
Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), located at Porompat, Imphal East, Manipur, is one of the most prominent state-funded medical institutions in Northeast India. The institution traces its origins to 1989, when the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital (JN Hospital) was established as a standalone tertiary care facility. Recognizing the critical need for medical education in Manipur, the Government of Manipur formally upgraded the hospital into a full-fledged medical college in 2010, thereby establishing JNIMS as a teaching institution. The institute is affiliated with Manipur University, Imphal, and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Situated approximately 4–5 km from Imphal city center and 5–8 km from the Imphal International Airport (IMF), JNIMS occupies a sprawling 52-acre campus that provides an ideal academic and clinical environment. The campus is easily accessible by local transport, taxis, and auto-rickshaws from the airport and city center, making it well-connected for students from across Manipur and Northeast India. Academically, JNIMS is among the most comprehensive medical institutions in Northeast India, offering undergraduate MBBS (150 seats), postgraduate MD/MS programs across 14 disciplines (66 seats), BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery), and specialty clinics. In 2017, a separate dental college was added to the JNIMS campus, further expanding its academic portfolio. As of May 2019, JNIMS had produced 11 academic batches — nine MBBS batches and two BDS batches. The campus infrastructure is impressive for a state institution. The new academic block houses administrative sections, faculty offices, a central library with an examination hall of 300-seat capacity, three lecture halls of 180-seat capacity each, two common rooms, and a lecture theatre of 450-seat capacity. The campus is also equipped with clinical laboratories, departmental museums, a fully equipped auditorium, and a sports ground. JNIMS Hospital — the attached teaching facility — is a major tertiary care multi-specialty hospital with 550+ beds and approximately 250+ dedicated medical staff. It serves a population of over 6 lakh people in surrounding areas and handles 1,200+ outpatients daily. The hospital features four blocks: a separate OPD Block, a Medicine Block, the main block with various wards including Casualty and Special wards. Clinical departments include General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Pulmonology, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Anaesthesiology, Radiodiagnosis, Pathology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry. Specialty clinics include the Spine Clinic, Knee Clinic, CTEV Clinic, Urology Clinic, Neurosurgery Clinic, Paediatric Surgery, Oncology Clinic, Cardiology Clinic, Diabetic Clinic, Thyroid Clinic, Gastroenterology Clinic, and Pain Clinic. As a government medical college, JNIMS offers extremely affordable MBBS education with tuition fees approximately ₹30,000–₹40,000 per year excluding hostel and examination fees, with total course fees highly subsidized (under ₹30,000 INR for the full MBBS program as per some sources). This makes JNIMS one of the most cost-effective premier medical institutions in India. Hostel facilities at JNIMS are well-structured. There are four separate hostels: male MBBS students are accommodated in dedicated boys' hostels, and female MBBS students are housed in a single state-of-the-art girls' hostel. Additionally, separate accommodation is provided for PG students, resident doctors, and interns. Hostel amenities include mess facilities, Wi-Fi, study halls, 24-hour security, and common recreation areas. The campus includes playgrounds, a dental college building, nurses' quarters, and faculty blocks. NEET UG cutoff at JNIMS for General category AIQ (All India Quota) in 2024 was between rank 14,688 (opening) and 17,709 (closing) in Round 1. For NEET PG, the closing rank for MD programs ranged between 3,793–185,275 across all categories in 2024. Junior Resident (Intern) stipends at JNIMS are approximately ₹50,000–₹60,000 per month, reflecting good support for graduates pursuing hospital training. JNIMS offers scholarships for financially weak students, reserved category students (SC, ST, OBC), and meritorious students. The institution provides compulsory rural service bond requirements for graduates, ensuring continued service to the state of Manipur. As a premier state government medical institution with over 15 years of academic excellence, JNIMS stands as a pillar of healthcare education and services in Manipur and the Northeast region.
