About Kakatiya Medical College, Warangal
Kakatiya Medical College (KMC), Warangal — officially located in Hanamkonda district, Telangana — is one of India's oldest and most prestigious government medical colleges, founded on 23 July 1959 by the Warangal Regional Medical Education Society with the active support of then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, Director of Medical Services AP, and Warangal District Collector Mohsin Bin Shabbir. Shabbir's contribution is immortalised at the main entrance with the quote: 'The Earth sometimes bears gems and here is one.' The college was officially inaugurated on 23 July 1959 by P. Karmarkar, Minister of Health, Government of India. Initially housed in a building donated by the Pingali family at Waddepally, it shifted to makeshift buildings in November 1961 and moved to its permanent campus in 1966 — the permanent building was inaugurated by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The college later came under the Government of Andhra Pradesh, and post-bifurcation, is administered by the Government of Telangana, DME. Affiliated with KNRUHS, Warangal (since 2014; formerly NTR University of Health Sciences since 1997), and recognised by NMC, KMC boasts an expansive campus spanning 152.17 acres — the largest medical college campus in Telangana and one of the largest in India. It is consistently ranked as the 3rd best medical college in Telangana (after Osmania and Gandhi Medical Colleges, Hyderabad). KMC offers 250 MBBS seats annually and has conferred MBBS degrees on over 5,600 graduates since inception. PG courses were introduced in 1972 and now span 21 disciplines (167 seats). NMC has also sanctioned Super Specialty DM/MCh seats in 5 departments. A 24-storeyed Kakatiya Multi-Speciality Hospital (one of India's tallest hospitals) is under construction. KMC's primary teaching hospital is the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital, Warangal — a 1,450-bed tertiary care facility with 1,800+ outpatients daily, serving over 1 million population across Warangal, Karimnagar, Khammam, and North Telangana. B.Sc Allied Health Sciences and MLT courses commenced from 26 February 2026.
