About Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore
Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Mangalore is one of India's most internationally acclaimed private medical institutions — part of a celebrated legacy that began when Dr. Tonse Madhav Ananth Pai (T.M.A. Pai) established Kasturba Medical College at Manipal on 30 June 1953, India's first self-financing private medical college. KMC Mangalore was established in 1955, with the first batch of students arriving in Mangalore for clinical training at Government Wenlock Hospital and Government Lady Goschen Hospital — the first Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model in Indian medical education. KMC Mangalore became an independent unit in 1977 and a constituent college of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) in 1993 when MAHE received Deemed University status. Today, MAHE is an Institution of Eminence (MHRD designation) with NAAC A++ Grade (CGPA 3.71), ranked 4th among Indian universities by NIRF 2024, ranked 251–300 globally in Medicine by QS 2025 (2nd in India after AIIMS), and hosting 90,000+ students from 30+ countries across its campuses. KMC Mangalore is ranked 33rd by NIRF 2024 (23rd by NIRF 2023), 29th by India Today 2025, 56th by IIRF 2024 — consistently among India's top 25 medical colleges. MBBS and PG degrees are recognized by GMC (UK), ECFMG (USA), AMC (Australia), MMC (Malaysia), and various other global bodies, and are accepted worldwide. KMC Mangalore holds a first-of-its-kind AAHRPP accreditation (2011) — the first Indian institution to receive this, indicating world-class research ethics standards. International academic linkages include Loma Linda University (USA), Dundee University (Scotland), University of Minnesota (USA), Maastricht University (Netherlands), University of Missouri (USA), and Operation Eyesight Universal (Canada), among others. Students from 45+ countries have graduated from KMC. The main college campus is at 203 Light House Hill Road, Hampankatta, Mangaluru — 575001, with a Centre for Basic Sciences at Bejai (for first-year MBBS students, since 2001). The campus features 7 large air-conditioned lecture halls with advanced multimedia/AV, a modern AC library (3 floors, 2,025 sq.m., 36,009+ books, 350+ journal subscriptions, 400+ seating, internet access), 9 hostels (5 for women), a Medical Education Unit, a TMA Pai Convention Centre, a large indoor multi-purpose sports complex, and strong clinical training at its network of teaching hospitals. Combined teaching bed strength: 1,500+ beds. In 2017, KMC Mangalore extended its PPP at Government Wenlock Hospital for 33 more years, until 2050, agreeing to build a super-specialty hospital there.
