About Late Smt. Indira Gandhi Memorial Government Medical College, Kanker

Late Smt. Indira Gandhi Memorial Government Medical College, Kanker (renamed from Government Medical College, Kanker effective 15 January 2025) is a government medical college established in 2020 by the Government of Chhattisgarh under the NMC Act, 2019. Located in Kanker district at Nandanmara, the college serves the Bastar division and surrounding tribal districts of Chhattisgarh. It is affiliated to Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay Memorial Health Sciences and Ayush University, Raipur, and is recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The college is associated with the prestigious 350-bed Komaldev District Hospital, Kanker — a facility donated to the public by Maharaja Komaldev Ji in 1928 and the cornerstone of healthcare in the region for nearly a century. The hospital provides clinical training across 22 departments including General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesiology, Radiology, Psychiatry, Dermatology, TB & Chest, Forensic Medicine, and Dentistry. With an annual intake of 125 MBBS seats, the college offers modern academic infrastructure: lecture theatres, advanced clinical and pre-clinical laboratories, skill lab, central library, and separate hostels for boys and girls. As a newly established college in a tribal region, GMC Kanker plays a vital role in addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals in the Bastar belt. Admission is through NEET-UG via CG State Quota (85%) and All India Quota (15%) counselling. Post-MBBS graduates undergo a compulsory rural service bond before they can practise freely, with a penalty of approximately ₹25 lakhs for non-completion. The college is rapidly building its academic and clinical reputation under the aegis of the CG Directorate of Medical Education.
