About Maulana Azad Medical College
Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), New Delhi is one of India's most prestigious and celebrated government medical colleges — named after Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the great freedom fighter, scholar, and first Minister of Education of independent India. MAMC was established in 1958 by the Government of India and the Government of NCT of Delhi. The foundation stone was laid in 1959 by then Home Minister Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant — who called it a symbol of transformation, noting it was established on a site that once held a jail, now becoming a place that heals people and shapes future doctors. The college is affiliated with the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Delhi, and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It is run by the Government of NCT of Delhi with full recognition by the Government of India. MAMC has an annual intake of 250 MBBS students, 245 post-graduate and post-doctoral students, and is trained by 426 faculty members and 810 resident doctors. MAMC's 122-acre campus in the heart of Delhi near Delhi Gate houses four of India's best teaching hospitals: (1) Lok Nayak Jay Prakash (LNJP) Hospital — formerly Irwin Hospital, one of Delhi's largest multi-specialty hospitals; (2) GB Pant Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (GIPMER) — a super-specialty hospital renowned for Cardiology, Gastroenterology, and Neurology, established in 1964; (3) Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) — one of India's best dental colleges, founded in 1983; and (4) Guru Nanak Eye Centre (GNEC) — Delhi's premier tertiary eye care centre, established 20th December 1977. Together, these four hospitals provide 2,800 beds, 47 operation theatres, and 7,200+ daily outpatient attendance. MAMC also has Sushruta Trauma Centre (STC), Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya (CNBC), and an internationally recognised Genetic Lab & Clinic — one of eight Centres of Excellence for Rare Diseases designated by MoHFW, and a Centre of Excellence for Training of In-Service Faculty under the Department of Biotechnology. MAMC is currently ranked 3rd in India by India Today & Times of India. The college extends healthcare to 30,000+ rural Delhi population through organised community health centres.
