Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata (MCH Kolkata), officially established in 1835 by Lord William Bentinck, is India's first modern medical institution and the first in Asia to teach Western medicine in the English language. With a legacy spanning nearly 190 years, it stands as one of the most prestigious and historically significant government medical colleges in India. The college is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS), and listed in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools. Principal/Dean: Dr. Tapan Kumar Lahiri. The college is ranked #44 among medical colleges in India by NIRF 2024, #25 by India Today 2024, and #9 by IIRF 2024. West Bengal domicile (nativity) is required for State Quota seats. The campus blends iconic colonial architecture (British-era heritage buildings) with modern medical infrastructure, housing the main academic block, the 1,370-bed teaching hospital, hostel buildings (including the New Hostel Building and Ratri Nibas Building), library, auditorium, and student amenities within a compact urban campus.
