About Nandi Medical College and Research Institute, Chikkaballapura
Nandi Medical College and Research Institute (NMC&RI), Chikkaballapura — formerly known as Chikkaballapura Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS) — is a newly established fully autonomous government medical college, renamed effective 29 July 2025 in honour of the iconic Nandi Hills (Nandidurga) that define Chikkaballapura's geographical and cultural identity. The college was established in 2021 by the Government of Karnataka with the first MBBS batch of 100 students. MBBS intake has since been expanded to 150 seats. The college is affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru, and approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC). PG (MD) courses including MD Anaesthesiology have been approved; PG seat matrix is growing as the college matures. The college's permanent campus — a 57.24-acre site near Arooru village on the Bengaluru–Hyderabad Asian Highway (NH-44) — is under active construction. Clinical operations are currently conducted at the New District Hospital, M G Road, Chikkaballapura (also the official NMC-listed address). The attached New District Hospital is a 300-bed (expanding to 750 beds) multi-specialty teaching hospital providing 24×7 emergency services and comprehensive clinical specialties including General Medicine, Surgery, OBG, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Dermatology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Forensic Medicine. Some sources cite 750+ beds (likely including sanctioned expansion beds). Alongside MBBS, the college runs BSc programmes in Nursing, Imaging Technology, Anaesthesia Technology, Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT), and other Allied Health Sciences. MBBS fee: ₹65,100/year. Intern stipend: ₹30,000/month. NEET 2025 AIQ General Round 4 closing rank: 27,016. Karnataka State Quota 2025 Round 2 General Home State closing rank: 47,186. Only 2 AIQ allotments during NEET 2021–2024 combined — reflecting very nascent stage. Chikkaballapura district is historically notable as the birthplace of Sir M. Visvesvaraya (Muddenahalli, 3 km from city), home to the iconic Nandi Hills (28 km), and close to Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (KIAL, 39 km). A Pharmaceutical SEZ of USD 400 million on 325 acres is being developed at Chikkaballapura — the first of its kind in India.
