About Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College

Official website

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College (NSCBMC), Jabalpur, stands as one of the oldest and most revered government medical institutions in Madhya Pradesh and indeed in the whole of central India. Founded in 1955 as Government Medical College, Jabalpur, the institution was inaugurated by then Prime Minister of India, the late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru — a founding gesture that underlines the deep national importance attached to it from the very beginning. The college was later renamed in honor of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, one of the most iconic leaders of the Indian independence movement, whose name the institution carries with immense pride. Today, NSCBMC is the third oldest medical college in the state of Madhya Pradesh and consistently ranks among the top government medical colleges in the country. Situated in the Garha region of Jabalpur, surrounded by the scenic Vindhya hills, the college is spread across a sprawling 187-acre campus. The campus is designed to support an intensive medical education environment, housing modern academic blocks with large lecture halls equipped with smart boards, projectors, and five LCD screens per hall, making for a technologically enriched classroom experience. The campus includes the main teaching hospital — NSCB Medical College Hospital — which is a fully operational tertiary care facility with over 1,000 beds, serving the medical needs of Jabalpur and the entire Mahakoshal region. This hospital, with its high patient footfall across multiple departments, provides MBBS and postgraduate students with unmatched clinical exposure in real-world patient care scenarios, from routine OPD consultations to complex surgical interventions. The college currently enrolls 250 MBBS students per year and offers a wide range of postgraduate programs including MD, MS, DM (Super Specialty), M.Ch., and PG Diploma courses across 20+ medical specializations. Nursing and paramedical programs such as BPT, GNM, and various Diplomas in allied health sciences are also offered, making NSCBMC a comprehensive medical education hub that serves a large and diverse student population from the Mahakoshal region and beyond. With over 237 qualified faculty members holding MD, MS, and PhD degrees, the academic environment is rigorous, research-oriented, and rooted in strong clinical practice. One of NSCBMC's most celebrated features is its Surgery department, which is widely regarded as one of the best in all of Madhya Pradesh. The Radiology and Radio-Diagnosis department is also highly prestigious, attracting top NEET PG rankers nationally. Notably, the college became the first medical institution in Madhya Pradesh to introduce Pediatric 3D Laparoscopy in 2018, a testament to its commitment to staying at the frontiers of medical technology and surgical innovation. It is also among the first government colleges in the state to adopt a fully digital hospital management information system, in alignment with the Smart Cities Mission under which Jabalpur has been selected for development. The associated hospital complex is further supported by specialized allied institutions including a dedicated Cancer Hospital, Pediatric Hospital, Spine Injury Centre, ART (Anti-Retroviral Therapy) Centre, and an Orthopedic Block. Upcoming additions include a state-of-the-art Super-Specialty Block, a State Cancer Institute, a new 250-seat hospital and academic centre, a dedicated TB and Chest Hospital, a Neurosurgery Block, and a pioneering RBSK (Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram) Pediatric Surgery Unit — one of the first of its kind in India. These developments are set to make NSCBMC an even more powerful medical institution in the years to come. For students, NSCBMC offers a highly affordable medical education by virtue of its government status, with annual MBBS tuition fees of approximately ₹1.23 lakhs — a fraction of what private medical colleges charge. Hostel accommodations are available for both boys and girls, with a newly constructed boys' hostel featuring Wi-Fi, air-conditioned study rooms, and a supervised mess. The library holds approximately 80,000 books and journals across medical disciplines, with a 24-hour reading room facility. Sports grounds, a canteen, and on-campus medical facilities round out student life on campus. Alumni of NSCBMC hold positions of great national and international repute. Among the most distinguished are Dr. Yogesh Kumar Chawla — Padma Shri awardee and former Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh — and Dr. Pradeep Chowbey — Padma Shri awardee and Chairman of Max Healthcare. The college's legacy of producing such distinguished physicians reflects its deep commitment to excellence in medical education, ethical practice, and service to the nation. Students completing MBBS from NSCBMC are required to serve a compulsory rural bond period, during which they are compensated with approximately ₹50,000–₹60,000 per month, providing valuable early career experience and contributing to rural healthcare in Madhya Pradesh. Internship stipends during the mandatory one-year rotating internship at the attached hospital are approximately ₹13,000–₹14,000 per month. NSCBMC is ranked 40th among medical colleges in India (IIRF 2025), 79th in 2024, and 2nd in Madhya Pradesh, and carries a 4.2-star rating from students. It continues to be among the most sought-after government medical colleges in central India, with a NEET UG General category closing rank of approximately 6,583 for MBBS admission.
