For admission to the first semester, a candidate should have passed the Class 10 examination of the Board of Secondary Education, Odisha, or an equivalent examination declared equivalent by the board, with the minimum aggregate marks and subject passes prescribed in the state admission brochure. There is a lower age limit of 14 years, and no upper age limit applies. For direct admission to the third semester under lateral entry, candidates need a pass in Class 12 Science from CHSE Odisha or an equivalent board with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, or a two-year vocational course in an engineering trade, or a two-year ITI in an engineering trade after Class 10. Details of the merit and cutoff pattern are explained separately.
- Register on the SAMS Odisha portal with a mobile number and email address and create a login
- Fill the Common Application Form (CAF) with personal, academic and category details
- Upload the required documents and pay the prescribed application fee online
- Attend document verification if called at a designated nodal centre
- Check the published merit list and note your merit rank
- Fill in the college and branch choices during e-counselling, listing NIST Balasore and preferred branches
- Download the seat allotment letter, deposit the admission fee and report to the institute with original documents
The merit list is prepared using the marks obtained in the qualifying examination, and when two or more candidates have equal marks the tie is generally broken using the marks in Mathematics, then Science, then English. Separate merit lists are prepared for different domicile and reservation categories as per the state government norms. Supernumerary seats are also provided for tuition fee waiver candidates, economically weaker section candidates and lateral entry as per the state rules. Applicants are advised to fill a good number of choices so that they have a fallback if their first preference is not allotted.
Documents normally required at the time of reporting include the Class 10 mark sheet and pass certificate, a conduct certificate and school leaving or college leaving certificate from the last institution attended, caste or category certificate where applicable, residential certificate, passport size photographs, the seat allotment letter and the fee deposit slip. Lateral entry candidates must also carry their Class 12, vocational or ITI certificates. It is wise to keep several photocopies ready along with the originals. The list of scholarship options available after admission can be checked in advance.
Application dates, counselling rounds and the branch-wise seat matrix change every academic year and are announced by the state authorities on the SAMS portal, usually in the first half of the year. Candidates who miss an early round can often participate in later rounds if seats remain vacant. For questions about hostel rooms, transport routes and the payable fee, applicants can contact the institute on +91 93386 91255 or write to nist.bls@gmail.com. The complete tuition details are available on the fee structure page.
