About Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research
The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, is one of India's most prestigious medical institutions and a globally recognized centre of excellence for postgraduate medical education, research, and patient care. Established in 1962 under an Act of Parliament, PGIMER has been recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India — a distinction shared only by a handful of elite institutions in the country. Strategically located in Sector 12, Chandigarh, the institute serves as the primary tertiary referral centre for the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand, managing some of the most complex and challenging medical cases in North India. The institute was established through a collaboration between the Government of India and WHO under the Colombo Plan, with the mandate to provide high-quality postgraduate medical education, conduct cutting-edge research, and render advanced clinical services to the population of Northern India. PGIMER is consistently ranked #2 in India under the Medical category by NIRF rankings (2024 and 2025) with a score of 82.58, and ranks between 451–500 globally in Life Sciences, Clinical and Medicine by QS World University Rankings 2024, testifying to its world-class standards. The institute's sprawling 277-acre campus in the heart of Chandigarh is home to the iconic Nehru Hospital Complex, the Advanced Paediatric Centre (APC), the Advanced Eye Centre (AEC), the Advanced Cardiac Centre (ACC), the Advanced Urology Centre, the Oral Health Sciences Centre, the Gastroenterology Centre, the Renal Transplant Centre, the Bone Marrow Transplant Centre, the Drug De-Addiction Centre, a Trauma Centre, a PET Centre, and the Telemedicine Centre. Together, these facilities offer comprehensive medical and surgical care across all specializations, sub-specializations, and super-specializations. Academically, PGIMER offers a comprehensive range of courses at every level — from undergraduate B.Sc. and BPT programs, to postgraduate MD, MS, MDS, M.Sc., MPH programs, to super-specialty DM and MCh programs, and finally to Ph.D. and Fellowship/Post-Doctoral Fellowship programs. The institute is internationally recognized for producing top-tier medical professionals, researchers, and educators. The academic calendar operates on a January and July session cycle, with MD/MS/DM/MCh/MDS admissions conducted through the INI-CET (Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test), administered by AIIMS New Delhi. Admissions to B.Sc., M.Sc., B.Sc. Nursing, and M.Sc. Nursing programs are based on PGIMER's own entrance examinations. The cornerstone of PGIMER's clinical training is the legendary Nehru Hospital, one of India's highest-volume referral hospitals, along with the Advanced Paediatric Centre, Vir Chandra Singh Garhwali Government Institute of Medical Science, and satellite centres. Postgraduate residents at PGIMER receive one of the highest stipends among government institutions in India — approximately ₹65,000–1,10,000 per month as per 7th CPC norms — along with accommodation, mess facilities, and comprehensive healthcare benefits. The depth and breadth of patient exposure at PGIMER, combined with world-class mentorship from faculty who are leaders in their fields, makes it the dream destination for postgraduate medical aspirants across India. The Dr. Tulsi Das Library is one of India's premier medical libraries, housing 45,696 books, 57,610 bound journals, 494+ online journals, and access to Science Direct, Wiley-Blackwell, and Oxford journals, supporting both clinical and research activities. The National Institute of Nursing Education (NINE), affiliated to PGIMER, has been a WHO Collaborative Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Development since March 2003. PGIMER's research output and clinical contributions have earned it recognition from the WHO, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, ICMR, and leading global medical bodies. PGIMER is a mandatory choice for any serious medical postgraduate in India. Its combination of unparalleled patient exposure, world-renowned faculty, affordable government fees, excellent stipends, and an extraordinary research environment make it the #1 destination for MD/MS admissions in India after AIIMS New Delhi. Alumni of PGIMER serve as leaders in healthcare, academia, and research across India and globally. With an ongoing commitment to excellence and continuous expansion of facilities and courses, PGIMER Chandigarh remains at the vanguard of medical education and healthcare in India.
