Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial Medical College (PTJNMMC), Raipur, established on 9 September 1963, is the oldest and most prominent government medical college in Chhattisgarh. Affiliated to Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay Memorial Health Sciences and Ayush University and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC), it is the tertiary medical and health services hub for the entire state of Chhattisgarh, catering to a population of approximately 2 crore people. The college began with 60 MBBS seats and grew steadily — 100 seats from 1976, 150 from 2009, and 180 seats from AY 2019 onwards. PG courses were introduced in 1971–72, and the college now offers 136 MD/MS seats across 18 disciplines and 6 DM/MCh super-speciality seats across 3 disciplines (Neurosurgery, Paediatric Surgery, and one other discipline). Its teaching hospital, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital (commonly known as MECAHARA – Medical College Hospital Raipur), was established in 1995 and has grown into the largest tertiary care government hospital in CG with approximately 1,340 beds. Services span 11 operation theatres, a Regional Cancer Centre with Linear Accelerator and Cobalt Machine, advanced ICUs (CCU, NICU), super-specialty services in Cardiology, Nephrology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, and Paediatric Surgery, a licensed Blood Bank, and a 24×7 Emergency & Trauma unit. Average daily OPD attendance exceeds 900 patients with over 100 major and minor surgical procedures daily. Spread over 70+ acres in the heart of Raipur near the railway station and airport, the campus features four modern lecture theatres, advanced laboratories, a richly stocked central library with 20,000+ books, two auditoriums (500 and 750 capacity), departmental museums, a Multidisciplinary Research Unit (MRU), and separate hostel facilities for boys (4 blocks) and girls (3 blocks). The college holds annual academic and cultural events including PLEXUS, Hygienica, and WAHUJ (freshers' event).
