About Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi
Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi is a premier government autonomous medical college established in 1960 under the Government of Jharkhand. It is one of the oldest and most reputed medical institutions in the state, serving as a tertiary care teaching hospital and referral centre for the entire Jharkhand region and neighbouring states. Originally known as Rajendra Medical College, it was renamed and granted autonomous status to enhance medical education and healthcare delivery. The college is affiliated to Ranchi University and fully recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) with an approved intake of 180 MBBS seats, along with extensive PG (MD/MS/Diploma) and super-specialty (DM/MCh) programs. The sprawling campus spread over approximately 180–214 acres is located at Bariatu in Ranchi and boasts excellent connectivity via road, rail, and air. RIMS is attached to a massive 1700-bed teaching hospital that handles over 3000 OPD patients daily, providing unparalleled clinical exposure to students. The hospital includes advanced facilities such as a dedicated Trauma Centre, multiple ICUs, modern operation theatres, dialysis unit, super-specialty services in cardiology, neurology, oncology, neurosurgery, and more. Academics follow the NMC-prescribed CBME curriculum for UG and standard guidelines for PG/SS. Faculty comprises highly experienced professors and specialists actively involved in teaching, research, and patient care. Infrastructure includes a newly inaugurated Central Library (2023) with extensive print and digital resources, well-equipped pre-clinical and para-clinical laboratories, air-conditioned lecture halls with audio-visual aids, large auditorium, indoor/outdoor sports stadium, gym, Wi-Fi campus, multiple canteens, and separate hostels for boys (15+) and girls (10+) with mess, laundry, and security. Campus life is vibrant with regular workshops, seminars, cultural fests, blood donation camps, anti-ragging measures, NSS activities, and national day celebrations. Students engage in research, community outreach, and extracurricular clubs. The urban location in Ranchi offers easy access to markets, transport, and amenities. Placements are excellent with nearly 100% internship absorption; graduates secure positions in government health services, pursue PG (NEET-PG), or join reputed hospitals/private sector. A service bond may apply in some cases. During internship, students receive a monthly stipend (around ₹26,300 as per recent records). Scholarships are available for SC/ST/OBC/EWS via state/central schemes. RIMS continues upgrading with new additions like pain & palliative care, telemedicine, and proposed expansions. It remains the top choice for medical aspirants in Jharkhand due to its legacy of over six decades, affordable fees, outstanding clinical training, strong alumni network, and commitment to producing skilled, ethical doctors serving society nationwide and abroad.
