SLNMCH is the sole government medical college serving the entire KBK region — a vast tribal belt covering Koraput, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Bolangir, Bargarh, and Sonepur districts. It is the only affordable advanced healthcare facility for millions of tribals who previously had to travel 300–400 km to SCB or MKCG medical colleges. Its existence directly improves healthcare access and produces doctors who understand and serve tribal communities.

The SLNMCH campus is one of the largest among Odisha government medical colleges at 52 acres. The teaching hospital has 650 beds (newly inaugurated in 2024-25) with a 20-bed ICU and 24x7 emergency care. The hospital has roots going back to 1908 (as a dispensary) and 1937 (as a Local Fund Hospital with 47 beds) — one of the oldest healthcare facilities in southern Odisha.
