About Shri Rama Chandra Bhanja Medical College & Hospital, Cuttack
Shri Rama Chandra Bhanja Medical College & Hospital (SCBMCH), universally known as SCB Medical College, is one of India's oldest, largest, and most prestigious government medical institutions. Located in Mangalabag, Cuttack, Odisha, it was originally established as the Orissa Medical School in 1875 by Dr. William Day Stewart. It was converted into a full-fledged medical college in 1944 during the pre-independence era. The institution was later renamed in 1951 in honour of Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanj Deo of Mayurbhanj, a key benefactor and champion of medical education in Odisha. SCBMCH has evolved from a small dispensary into a colossal super-specialty teaching hospital and premier academic institution. Today it is the largest tertiary care medical facility in Odisha and one of the top 20 medical colleges in India (NIRF 2025 Rank #18), holding NAAC A++ accreditation. The campus spans approximately 87–101 acres in the heart of Cuttack — one of Odisha's most historic cities — approximately 30 km from Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar. Academics & Scale: SCBMCH has an MBBS intake of 250 seats — one of the highest in any government medical college in India. It offers postgraduate MD/MS in 26 disciplines (232 PG seats) and super-specialty DM/MCh in 12 disciplines (43 seats), making it one of the most comprehensive medical institutions in eastern India. The college also offers BDS (via associated dental college), B.Sc Nursing, DMLT, DMRT, D.Pharm, Diploma Psychology Nursing, and other paramedical diploma programmes. Teaching Hospital: The attached SCBMCH hospital is one of the largest government teaching hospitals in eastern India with 2,000+ functional beds (expanding to 5,000 beds under an AIIMS-plus model redevelopment). The hospital receives over 7 lakh OPD attendances annually and handles complex tertiary and quaternary care referrals from all over Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. The hospital has specialist departments across all medical and surgical disciplines, advanced ICU and trauma care, a dedicated cancer care wing, cardiology, nephrology, neurology, and is a hub for national public health programmes. Research & Innovation: SCB is a nationally recognised research centre and a training hub for AIIMS faculty and other institutes. The NIRF 2025 data shows UG median packages rising from ₹7.68 LPA to ₹13.17 LPA and PG median from ₹10.80 LPA to ₹14.40 LPA over three academic years, reflecting the institution's growing placement success. The college publishes nationally recognised research output and collaborates with international institutions. Redevelopment (AIIMS-Plus): The Government of Odisha has announced a mega-redevelopment of SCBMCH on the AIIMS-plus model, expanding to 5,000 beds — making it potentially India's largest government healthcare complex. This includes new super-specialty towers, advanced trauma care, medical research parks, and expanded academic facilities. Student Life: SCB hosts Synapse — one of Odisha's largest annual medical cultural fests. Active UG and PG student unions are elected annually. The campus has a gymnasium, sports grounds, canteen, and vibrant extracurricular activities. The 1st year Boys hostel is named after Dr. B.C. Roy and the institution has several named hostels for different batches and PG residents. In summary, SCB Medical College, Cuttack is Odisha's premier government medical institution — NAAC A++ accredited, NIRF #18, with 250 MBBS seats, 26 PG disciplines, 12 super-specialty disciplines, a 2,000+ bed hospital, and a AIIMS-plus redevelopment underway. For any NEET aspirant targeting the best government medical college in eastern India, SCBMCH is the pinnacle choice.
