It was established in 2010 by the Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Educational (SDME) Society, under the presidency of Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade - the Dharmadhikari (religious and administrative head) of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala, Belthangadi, Dakshina Kannada, and a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award, in 2015.

The college is recognized by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM, successor to CCIM), New Delhi, and the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, and is affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bangalore. Although incepted in 2010, the institute's first BAMS batch was admitted in 2015-16.
