About Shimoga Institute of Medical Sciences, Shimoga
Shimoga Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), Shivamogga, is a fully autonomous government medical college established in 2007 by the Government of Karnataka, located within the historic premises of the Government McGann Hospital (est. 1880 by a British administrator) on NH-206 (Bengaluru–Honnavara National Highway), Shivamogga. The college is affiliated with RGUHS, Bengaluru, and approved by NMC for 150 MBBS seats and 42 PG seats in 16 disciplines (MD/MS + Diplomas). Being a 100% merit-based pure government institution, all MBBS seats are allotted via KEA (Karnataka State Quota, 85%) and MCC (AIQ, 15%) — no Management or NRI quota. SIMS is uniquely home to a Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) established by the Government of India — an ICMR-networked facility for viral disease surveillance and diagnostics, conferring specialized research capability rare among Karnataka government medical colleges. The 25-acre campus on the McGann Hospital premises is set in the beautiful, green, naturally scenic city of Shivamogga — famously known as the 'Gateway of Malnad' — in the foothills of the Western Ghats. The college building covers 2,23,838 sq.ft. across 4 floors; total campus floor area (including college, boys hostel, girls hostel, and doctors' quarters) is 34,488 sq.m. The campus houses very good spacious classrooms, lecture halls, examination halls (800 sq.m., 300-capacity), demonstration rooms, fully-equipped clinical/non-clinical laboratories, museums, an auditorium, a library and information centre (1,700 sq.ft. across 2nd and 3rd floors), gymnasium, common rooms, and 398 experienced teaching faculty. The library has large collections of medical books and Indian/foreign journals with separate reading rooms for students and staff, plus a Digital Library facility. A Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) is established on campus by GoI/ICMR. The primary attached teaching hospital is the Government McGann Hospital — originally constructed in 1880 by a British administrator on 70 acres, the new hospital block with 367 beds was built during 1991-92. The McGann Hospital has served as the major healthcare centre for Shivamogga district for over 140 years and handles the largest patient inflow in the district — over 850–950+ effective beds reported by various sources (some cite up to 950+ beds; one source 500 beds — original McGann capacity + 1991 block). SIMS also has BSc Nursing (closing rank 2025: 1,27,563 AIQ; 1,27,509 KCET). NIRF 2024: #210 (Medical). NEET 2024 AIQ GN last round closing rank: 16,477; OBC: 16,904. NEET 2025 Karnataka State Round 2 overall closing rank (all categories): 16,967–1,45,256; 1G category Round 2: 28,128–33,996. NEET PG 2025 Round 1 MD overall (all categories): AIR 642–1,07,826; MS: AIR 6,370–48,019. MBBS fee: ~₹64,350–₹80,400/year. Intern stipend: ₹30,000/month. PG: MS fee ₹3 lakhs total (3 years). Hostel fee: ₹72,000/year. 9 AIQ allotments during NEET 2021–2024 combined. Placement rate: 70–80%.
