The college was founded on 8th May 1917 by the late Vaidya Panchanan Gangadhar Shastri Gune, who established Ayurved Shastra Seva Mandal as the parent institute, inspired by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak's call for standardising Ayurvedic education across India.
