About Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital

Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), Muzaffarpur, is one of the oldest and most prestigious government medical colleges in Bihar, established on 11th May 1970. The institution was founded through the collective efforts of the Vaishali Shiksha Pratisthan — led by the visionary trio of Sri L.P. Shahi (then Cabinet Minister), Late Dr. S.M. Nawab (surgeon of national fame, founding principal), and Late Sri Raghunath Pandey — and was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Bihar, Late Sri Daroga Prasad Rai. The first batch of students was admitted for the session 1969–70. Initially operating from the S.K.J. Law College building at Ganipur, Muzaffarpur, the college was shifted to its permanent 170-acre campus at Umanagar, along the Muzaffarpur–Sitamarhi Road, in January 1973. By 1975, the campus had developed four boys' hostels with a combined capacity of 400 students, a separate girls' hostel, a principal's quarters, an 18-room guest house, a bank, a post office, and over 1.7 lakh sq. ft. of college building with two lecture theatres. The MCI (now NMC) granted recognition to the MBBS degree in 1979, the very first attempt. The college was formally taken over by the Bihar Government on 1st October 1979. Today, SKMCH is affiliated with Aryabhatta Knowledge University (AKU), Patna (since March 2010), and the Bihar University of Health Sciences (BUHS), Patna, and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The college offers MBBS (120 seats), MD/MS postgraduate programmes (26 seats across 12 disciplines), Paramedical courses, and a GNM Nursing programme through its attached Nursing Institute. The attached Sri Krishna Medical College Hospital is a massive 1,500+ bed tertiary care teaching hospital that serves as the primary healthcare hub for North Bihar, handling thousands of OPD patients daily. The campus also houses the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, operated under the Tata Memorial Centre and the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, which provides specialized cancer care and research on the SKMCH campus. A new Super Specialty Block with OPD has also been commissioned as of July 2024. Spread across 170 acres at Umanagar, the campus is fully Wi-Fi connected, with spacious classrooms, modern lecture halls, examination halls, demonstration rooms, seminar halls, fully equipped departmental labs and museums, a 24-hour central library with Elsevier access, a canteen, staff quarters, and an extensive range of sports and recreational facilities. SKMCH is consistently ranked among the top five government medical colleges in Bihar and holds an All India ranking of 173 (Edufever, 2025).
