⚠️ CRITICAL: NMC recognition WITHDRAWN January 6, 2026. NOT currently operational for MBBS. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) is a medical college established under the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) at Kakryal, Katra, Reasi district, J&K UT, affiliated to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU). The college was granted NMC's Letter of Permission on September 8, 2025 for 50 MBBS seats for the academic year 2025-26. It admitted its first MBBS batch in November 2025. Teaching Hospital: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super Specialty Hospital, Kakryal. Campus: within SMVDU premises with access to Central Library, sports facilities, comfortable hostels. SMVDIME was conceived to provide medical education while enhancing patient care for J&K and neighbouring states. However, on January 6, 2026, NMC MARB withdrew the LoP citing serious regulatory deficiencies found during a surprise inspection on January 2, 2026: 39% faculty deficiency, 65% SR/tutor deficiency, OPD of only 182 (vs required 400), 45% bed occupancy (vs required 80%), only 744 library books, and 2 functional OTs. All 50 admitted students are being relocated to other J&K UT govt. medical colleges as supernumerary seats. SMVDIME has reapplied for 2026-27 NMC approval (₹10 lakh deposit paid).

SMVDIME has reapplied to NMC for MBBS approval for 2026-27. The institute deposited ~₹10 lakh as NMC inspection and application fee. Decision pending NMC inspection and approval. No timeline confirmed as of March 2026.
NMC MARB conducted a surprise inspection on January 2, 2026 and found serious deficiencies: 39% faculty shortage, 65% SR/tutor shortage, OPD attendance of only 182 (required: 400), bed occupancy 45% (required: 80%), only 744 library books, only 2 functional OTs, and average 25 deliveries/month. LoP withdrawn under Section 28(7) of NMC Act 2019.
Of the 50 NEET-merit seats, 42 (84%) were admitted to Muslim students, triggering protests by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangarsh Samiti (60 pro-RSS/BJP groups) who argued that the shrine – funded by Hindu devotees – should prioritise Hindu students. J&K CM Omar Abdullah and NC spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar stated admissions were purely NEET merit-based and constitutional. The controversy attracted international media coverage (Al Jazeera, The Print, Kashmir Observer).
