About Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Sri Amritsar

Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (SGRDIMSR), located at Vallah on Mehta Road (Shri Hargobindpur Road), Amritsar, Punjab, is a distinguished Sikh Minority private medical institution named after the fourth Sikh Guru — Sri Guru Ram Das Ji — the founder of the holy city of Amritsar. Established in 1997 under the aegis of Sri Guru Ram Das Charitable Hospital Trust (registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860), the institute began with a humble intake of 50 MBBS students, progressively expanding to 100 seats (MCI 2012) and then 150 seats (MCI 2017). The first MBBS batch graduated in December 2002. In 2016, SGRDIMSR made history by becoming the first Medical University in Amritsar, when Sri Guru Ram Das University of Health Sciences was established under SGRD University Act 2016 (Punjab Act No. 43 of 2016), published in the Punjab Government Gazette on 17 November 2016. Since Admission Batch 2017, the college has been affiliated with Sri Guru Ram Das University of Health Sciences, Sri Amritsar — a unique distinction that allows the institution to be both a medical college and its own affiliating university. Campus & Infrastructure: The SGRDIMSR campus spans over 11.56 acres on Mehta Road, Vallah, Amritsar. The campus is well-developed with technology-infused gallery-type lecture halls, demonstration halls, common rooms for boys and girls, examination halls, a Medical Skills Lab, departmental museums, well-equipped laboratories, conference halls, an auditorium, a central library, and an IT Cell. The campus is approximately 22.1 km from Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Amritsar, and 7.5 km from the City Bus Terminal. Teaching Hospital: The Sri Guru Ram Das Charitable Hospital provides the primary teaching facilities with over 1,000+ beds, serving a population of more than 20 lakh in Punjab and surrounding areas. In 2000, the Rotary Cancer Block — a 40+ bed dedicated cancer care unit — was established through the Rotary Cancer Care Research Foundation. The oncology department provides advanced Surgical, Medical (Chemotherapy, Immunotherapy, Hormone Therapy), Radiation Therapy, Haematology, and Bone Marrow Transplant services, with state-of-the-art equipment including Linear Accelerator with IGRT, IMRT, VMAT, and CT Simulator in the Radiotherapy department. Courses: SGRDIMSR offers MBBS (150 seats) and MD/MS in 18 disciplines (79 PG seats). MD disciplines include General Medicine, Anaesthesiology, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Community Medicine, Dermatology, Forensic Medicine, Microbiology, Pathology, Paediatrics, Pharmacology, Physiology, Psychiatry, and Radio Diagnosis. MS disciplines include ENT, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, and Orthopaedics. PG fees total approximately ₹19,50,000 for the 3-year duration. PhD programmes in 9 research areas are also ongoing. International Collaborations: SGRDIMSR has signed MoUs with internationally acclaimed institutions including Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (UK), Marien Hospital Stuttgart (Germany, Rhinoplasty), Clinique du Docteur Jean Caussee (France, Otology), FAIMER Philadelphia (ECFMG, USA), Genomic Medical Foundation (UK), Vincent's Hospital (Sydney), University of Toronto, Cape Breton University (Sydney), and Institute of Palliative Medicine (WHO Collaborating Centre) — reflecting a remarkable international footprint for a Punjab private college. Student Life: The institution currently has about 1,500 registered students across MBBS, PG, Nursing, and Allied Health Care Professional courses. Nine PhD research projects are actively being conducted. The college publishes Synapse — a quarterly university journal — and hosts annual events reflecting the vibrant academic culture. In summary, SGRDIMSR is a pioneering Sikh minority medical institution that has grown from a 50-seat college (1997) to become its own Medical University (2016), with 150 MBBS seats, 79 PG seats, a 1000+ bed hospital with a Rotary Cancer Block, international MoUs across 5 continents, and the distinction of being the first Medical University in Amritsar.
