Sri Lakshmi Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences (SLIMS), Pondicherry, is a reputed private deemed medical college established in 2006 in the tranquil surroundings of Kudupakkam, Puducherry. Founded with a vision to establish a multi-specialty hospital where the poor could receive free advanced medical care in an atmosphere of love and compassion, and to create a world-class teaching and research environment, SLIMS has grown steadily over nearly two decades into one of Pondicherry's prominent private medical institutions. SLIMS is affiliated with the Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER), a deemed university in Chennai, and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. BIHER has been ranked among the Top 150 Medical Colleges in India by NIRF 2022, lending SLIMS a credible academic pedigree. The college campus spans 75 acres of fully constructed area in Kudupakkam, providing a spacious and green environment for medical education. The academic infrastructure includes well-equipped lecture halls, seminar halls, examination halls, auditorium, sports and extracurricular activity facilities, and a fully air-conditioned library. The SLIMS library is a comprehensive academic resource with 17,800 books, 74 Indian journals, 48 foreign journals available as e-journals, online databases, CD-ROM collections, back volumes of magazines, a photocopying and scanning facility, internet access to online journals and e-books, a separate audio-visual room, and a dedicated computer section. The teaching hospital attached to SLIMS is a 1,190-bed multi-specialty facility that provides comprehensive healthcare services and serves as the clinical training hub for MBBS and PG students. The hospital is well-equipped across departments including Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Oncology, Paediatrics, General Medicine, and many more. With 860 operational beds at any point, the hospital provides consistent patient inflow for structured clinical postings. Academically, SLIMS offers 250 MBBS seats annually (expanded from 150 seats; 250 seats recognized and permitted under the NMC Act, 2019 for AY 2025-26), along with postgraduate MD/MS programs across 14 disciplines including Community Medicine, General Medicine, General Surgery, Radiology, Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Anaesthesiology, Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Ph.D. programs. Approximately 30% of students are from states other than Tamil Nadu/Pondicherry, creating a vibrant and cosmopolitan academic atmosphere. Orientation programs and English language support are provided to help outstation students adapt. All MBBS admissions at SLIMS are conducted through the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) Deemed University counselling — 100% centralized, merit-based, and transparent. No direct admissions are permitted. Management Quota annual tuition fee is ₹25,00,000; NRI Quota annual fee is USD 60,000 per year. Hostel facilities for boys and girls are available on campus with mess, Wi-Fi, and study areas. Interns are entitled to a monthly stipend during the compulsory 1-year rotating internship. After MBBS completion, candidates must complete compulsory rural service; failure to do so requires payment of a service bond penalty.
