About University of Lucknow
The University of Lucknow (LU) traces its origins to a proposal first raised by Raja Sir Mohammad Ali Mohammad Khan of Mahmudabad, championed further by Sir Harcourt Butler, the then Lieutenant-Governor of the United Provinces. Following a series of conferences and committee deliberations between 1919 and 1920, the University of Lucknow Act, No. V of 1920, received assent on 25th November 1920, and the university began both formal and informal teaching on 17th July 1921. Three existing institutions formed the university's founding nucleus: Canning College (handed over on 1st July 1922), King George's Medical College and Hospital (transferred on 1st March 1921, now King George's Medical University), and Isabella Thoburn College.
