About Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences, Saifai, Etawah
Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences (UPUMS), Saifai, Etawah — popularly known as Saifai Medical College — is a premier state government medical university located in the rural heartland of Uttar Pradesh. It was originally established in 2005 by the Government of UP as UP Rural Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (UPRIMS&R) in Saifai village, Etawah District. In February 2015, the UP Government initiated its upgrade to a full-fledged university; the UP University of Medical Sciences, Saifai, Etawah Bill-2015 was passed on 4 February 2015, approved on 2 May 2016, and the institution officially became a university on 5 June 2016 under Act No. 15 of 2016. UPUMS is accredited with NAAC B++ Grade, listed under UGC Section 2(f), recognized by the National Medical Commission, ISO 9001:2015 certified, and has received the Certificate of Appreciation from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It is named among India's recognized research institutions by DSIR (Ministry of Science & Technology) and is empanelled under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY. The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh has designated UPUMS as a 'Mentor Institute'. The university has a unique rural healthcare mandate — all MBBS graduates must serve in rural Uttar Pradesh after internship. With a 1,050-bed tertiary care hospital, a 150-bed trauma and burn centre, and a 528-bed super-specialty hospital, it is one of the largest and most comprehensive government medical campuses in UP. UPUMS comprises five faculties: Medicine, Dental Sciences, Paramedical Sciences, Nursing, and Pharmacy — making it a true multi-disciplinary health sciences university. A comprehensive central library with an extensive collection of medical textbooks, national and international journals, e-journals, digital resources, and a comfortable reading room. The library caters to undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-specialty students across all five faculties. Digital database access supports evidence-based medical education and research.
Laboratory
All departments have well-equipped, modern laboratories meeting NMC standards. Special research labs support DSIR-certified research activities. The Microbiology Department has a certified laboratory for Tuberculosis Drug Resistance Testing (proficiency certificate from LPA, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare). The ART Centre provides HIV/AIDS testing and treatment. Central Laboratory services cover Pathological, Clinical Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Histopathology investigations for inpatients.
Classrooms & Lecture Theatres
UPUMS has modern lecture halls and seminar rooms across all five faculties. All classrooms are equipped with advanced audio-visual aids and ICT-based teaching tools. Teaching follows the NMC-mandated Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) framework for MBBS and the NMC postgraduate regulations for MD/MS/DM/M.Ch. programmes. The campus integrates five faculties (Medicine, Dentistry, Paramedical Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy), a 1,728-bed hospital complex, 425+ doctors, 463+ nursing staff, hostel blocks, library, sports grounds, cafeteria, bank, and residential quarters for faculty — all in a lush, semi-rural setting.
