About Vardhman Mahavir Medical College & Safdarjung Hospital

Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) & Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi is one of India's most prestigious government medical colleges — a Central Government institution under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. VMMC was established in November 2001 and inaugurated on 17th December 2001 by then Prime Minister Sh. Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The college building was dedicated to the nation on 20th November 2007 by Vice President Sh. M. Hamid Ansari. The first MBBS batch was admitted in February 2002. VMMC is affiliated with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), New Delhi, and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Post-graduate (MD/MS) in clinical subjects at Safdarjung Hospital were running even before VMMC was established; pre- and para-clinical MD/MS subjects were started in 2011. From 2008 onwards all PG seats were affiliated to GGSIPU (previously with Delhi University). Safdarjung Hospital was founded in 1942 during the Second World War as a Base Hospital for Allied Forces and was taken over by the Government of India in 1954 under the Ministry of Health. Starting with only 204 beds, it has grown to 1,531+ authorised beds (1,550+ including bassinets) and is the largest hospital under MoHFW. Safdarjung Hospital has one of Asia's largest OPDs with annual outpatient attendance exceeding 10 lakh (1 million) patients. The college and hospital together are spread over 47 acres with an additional 11-acre residential hostel complex. The hospital provides total 325 post-graduate seats and 43 super-specialty seats across all disciplines. VMMC's teaching programmes include MBBS (170 seats), B.Sc Nursing (63 seats), Bachelor of Prosthetics & Orthotics (16 seats), B.Sc Medical Laboratory Technology / B.Sc MLT (25 seats), B.Sc Medical Imaging Technology / MIT (12 seats), Short-Term Trainings, Pre-Trauma Technician course, and PhD (23 recognised supervisors) — all confirmed from official DGHS/MoHFW data. The college runs a PhD course affiliated to GGSIPU. Notable distinctions: (1) Ranked 8th by India Today; (2) NIRF rank 17 (2024); (3) One of Asia's busiest hospitals — 10+ lakh annual OPD; (4) Annual deliveries approaching 25,000 in OBG department alone; (5) Over 1,531 authorised beds with all major super-specialties; (6) Annual socio-cultural and sports festival 'Nirvana' (started 2004) — one of Delhi's most celebrated medical college fests with celebrity appearances; (7) Students get 50% GGSIPU institutional preference quota for PG seats. Safdarjung Hospital was described as a 'Medical Marvel' by India Today Aspire (August 2013).

No. VMMC is a Central Government institution under MoHFW and does not impose the Delhi state compulsory rural service bond that applies to Delhi Government medical colleges (MAMC, BSAMCH, UCMS, etc.). Bond clauses for PG (MD/MS) graduates should be confirmed at the time of NEET PG counselling as policies may change. MBBS graduates from VMMC are free to pursue PG/career without a state-mandated rural bond — a significant advantage over Delhi state government medical college graduates.
