VIMSAR is named after Veer Surendra Sai, the legendary tribal freedom fighter of western Odisha who waged a fearless resistance against British colonial rule. He is one of Odisha's most revered historical heroes. The college was previously called Burla Medical College (BMC) and VSS Medical College before being renamed VIMSAR.
