About Burdwan Medical College, Burdwan
Burdwan Medical College and Hospital (BMC&H), located in Bardhaman (Burdwan), West Bengal, is one of the oldest and most prestigious government medical institutions in the state. The institution traces its origins to the Frazer Hospital, inaugurated on 9 November 1910 with 127 indoor beds. It was converted into Ronaldshay Medical School in 1921 and upgraded to Burdwan University Medical College in 1969. Affiliated to the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the college currently offers 200 MBBS seats annually along with a wide range of MD, MS, and DM postgraduate programmes. The college has earned a reputation as a Centre of Excellence in Patient Care, Medical Education, and Research. It houses an ICMR-DHR Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) within its Microbiology Department and has active research programmes including ICMR-HBCR (Hospital Based Cancer Registry). BMC&H is a major tertiary healthcare centre for Bardhaman district and surrounding regions, with a very high patient inflow enabling excellent clinical exposure for its students.

Laboratories
Well-equipped pre-clinical and para-clinical laboratories including Anatomy Dissection Halls, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, and Forensic Medicine labs. BMC hosts the ICMR-DHR Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL), Regional Viral Load Laboratory (RVLL), and National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme (NVHCP) laboratory โ all within the Microbiology Department. The ICMR Hospital-Based Cancer Registry (HBCR) unit under the TCCC Division supports institutional cancer research.

Hostel
Separate boys' and girls' hostel buildings are available on campus. Boys-to-girls ratio approximately 2:1. The girls' hostel is noted for its safety standards among West Bengal government medical colleges. Hostel amenities include study rooms, recreational / common rooms, mess facilities, and basic utilities. Hostel allotment is merit-based.

Sports & Recreation

The total MBBS tuition fee for the entire 5.5-year programme is approximately INR 47,000. Semester fee is approximately INR 4,500 per semester (9 semesters), with an admission fee of approximately INR 2,000. This makes BMC one of the most affordable medical colleges in India.
200 MBBS seats are approved by NMC for AY 2024-25. Of these, 30 seats (15%) are under the All India Quota (MCC counselling) and 170 seats (85%) are under the West Bengal State Quota (WBMCC counselling).
Interns receive a monthly stipend of approximately INR 25,000โ28,000 during the compulsory 1-year rotating internship at BMC&H. An optional 6-month housestaffship is available post-internship.
